Summer foods to balance hormones

Mood swings, restlessness, and sudden anger—all these are signs of hormonal imbalance. Hormonal imbalance also impacts your reproductive health and metabolism; hence, it is necessary to keep your hormonal balance in check. As per dietitian Manpreet Kalra, your hormonal health starts with what’s on your plate, especially in summer when hydration, gut health, and cooling foods can make a big difference. In a recent video on Instagram, she shared 10 hormone-friendly foods that one can add to the daily routine for better energy, mood, digestion, and skin.

2/11

Gond Katira

Also known as tragacanth gum, it is a natural resin that contains compounds believed to act as phytoestrogens, which may help balance estrogen levels, particularly useful for women experiencing menstrual irregularities or menopause. Its natural cooling effect helps counteract internal heat, which can be triggered by hormonal imbalances, thus helping with acne and skin issues linked to hormones.

3/11

Basil Seeds

These are tiny black seeds that contain plant-based estrogen-like compounds called phytoestrogens, which may help balance estrogen levels in the body. This can be beneficial for women dealing with irregular periods, PMS, or menopausal symptoms. Their cooling and anti-inflammatory nature may help ease bloating, cramps, and mood swings associated with the menstrual cycle.

4/11

Lemon Water

Lemon is rich in vitamin C, which is crucial for adrenal health. Healthy adrenal glands help manage cortisol (the stress hormone), reducing hormone-related fatigue, anxiety, and imbalances. Lemon water is alkalizing in the body, which helps reduce inflammation-a major contributor to hormone disruption.

5/11

Jaljeera

This tangy summer drink is made with a blend of spices including cumin, ginger, black salt, and mint, which all help stimulate digestive enzymes, reduce bloating, and support the liver — the organ responsible for metabolizing excess hormones. Cumin contains mild phytoestrogenic properties, helping to gently balance estrogen levels, particularly in women with irregular periods or hormonal acne. Jaljeera's cooling effect helps regulate body heat, which further helps balance hormonal imbalances.

6/11

Watermelon

Watermelon contains vitamin C, lycopene, and beta-carotene, which help reduce oxidative stress — a major trigger of hormonal imbalance. It is 90% water, which keeps the body and endocrine system well-hydrated for better hormone function.

7/11

Buttermilk

It is rich in probiotics, which help improve gut health, and it is said that a healthy microbiome is essential for hormonal stability. The calming, hydrating nature of buttermilk may help lower stress levels, indirectly balancing cortisol and supporting the adrenal glands. It aids in liver function, helping the body eliminate excess hormones like estrogen.

8/11

Jowar

Its high fiber content aids gut health and supports estrogen metabolism, helping the body eliminate excess hormones naturally through digestion.

9/11

Gulkand

Gulkand is made from rose petals and sugar (or honey), and is a traditional Ayurvedic remedy known for its cooling, soothing, and rejuvenating properties. Gulkand is known for its mood-enhancing and calming effects, which support adrenal health and reduce the impact of stress on hormone levels.

10/11

Jamun

Jamun is known to regulate blood sugar levels by improving insulin sensitivity. And stable blood sugar is critical for hormonal health. The iron and zinc in jamun support thyroid health, which is essential for metabolism and hormonal regulation.

11/11

Mango

Mango is a good source of selenium and zinc, both of which are important for thyroid health. Mango is loaded with powerful antioxidants like quercetin, astragalin, and mangiferin, which help fight oxidative stress and inflammation. And reducing oxidative stress is key to supporting hormonal health.
