Genius freezer hacks

Despite technology making life seemingly easier, many feel more overwhelmed than ever. Amid this chaos, the freezer remains an overlooked tool, often used only for basic storage, though it has the potential to revolutionize cooking, shopping, and food habits if used wisely.

2/11

Ice cube trays aren’t just for water

Freeze small portions of things you’d usually toss—like extra tomato paste, chopped garlic, minced herbs, or even leftover wine—into ice cube trays. Once frozen, pop them out and store in bags. You’ll be surprised how often a single cube of pesto or soy sauce saves dinner.

3/11

Labelling is cool

Everything looks the same under a layer of frost. Label it all. Use masking tape and a permanent marker, or go the extra mile with waterproof labels. Always write the contents and the date.

4/11

Store fruits when they are peak ripe

When berries are cheap and basil is taking over your kitchen counter, don’t let them rot, freeze them. Wash, prep, and pre-freeze them on a tray so they don’t clump, then transfer to bags. Same goes for blanched green beans, corn, or chopped spinach. You’ll be eating July peaches in December.

5/11

Bulk meals

On your off days or Sundays, make a double batch of that soup, stew, or casserole. Store half in a freezer-safe container with heating instructions right on the label. This way you won’t have to start all over again.

6/11

Bread freezes beautifully

Don’t freeze a whole loaf and expect magic. Slice it first. Wrap slices tightly in plastic or foil, stash in a Ziplock, and you can grab one at a time for toast, sandwiches, or croutons. Same goes for muffins, bagels, and even baked cake layers.

7/11

Bacon per slice

Never freeze your bacon altogether. Instead, lay individual bacon slices on a baking sheet and freeze until firm. Then fold the parchment paper into a bacon accordion and slip it into a Ziplock. You can cook one slice or three without defrosting the whole pack.

8/11

Grains that can have longer shelf life

Rice, quinoa, and farro take their sweet time. Make a huge batch, portion it out, and freeze. Thaw in the fridge while you’re at work, then microwave, and you will have your food ready in less than 20 minutes.

9/11

Sauces and stock, but better

Your homemade chicken stock? Don’t let it linger in the fridge. Freeze it in usable portions and mark the date clearly. You’ll thank yourself the next time you're too tired to cook but not tired enough for takeout regret.

10/11

Cookie dough

Scoop dough into balls, freeze them on a tray, then store in a bag. Bake straight from frozen whenever you need a mood boost (or a bribe). Add 2 minutes to the baking time and don’t apologize.

11/11

Pantry staples that thrive better in the freezer

Nuts, seeds, and whole-grain flours all go rancid faster than we admit. Store them in the freezer in airtight containers. This way there will be no weird flavor and they will have a longer life.
