Why can't you just stroll into a Hermès store and buy a Birkin?

The Hermès Birkin: What’s so iconic about it?

The Hermès Birkin bag is one of the most luxurious and exclusive accessories in the world. It is an epitome of wealth, status, and grandeur in the fashion world. Despite its super high price tag, the demand for Birkin bags always exceeds its supply for the year. But if you think it’s too easy to get your hands on it, then you’re wrong. Unlike the other luxury labels, you can’t just walk into a Hermès boutique and immediately buy a Birkin. Call it their marketing or sales strategy, but you do not choose a Birkin; it chooses you.

How long does one have to wait?

There is no formal waiting, but just a priority system that is based on how much you’re spending and your relationship with the store. The average waiting time for a Birkin bag for new clients is around 1 to 3 years, or never if they are rejected. Regular clients need to wait for 6 months to 1 year, whereas VIP clients can be offered directly when the new shipment arrives. Whether you’re a celebrity or someone from the elite society, everyone has to follow the rules set by Hermès. But do you know that there are some high-profile celebs who had difficulty getting a Birkin?

Birkin: A symbol of scarcity and exclusivity

One of the most desired bags globally, even celebrities and elite-class clients struggle to get their hands on one. But why is that? Let’s take a deep dive into the brand’s exclusive strategy and how it’s thriving. The limited production of the bag stands to be one of the brand’s strategies, which is a solid hit. Each Birkin is handcrafted by a single artisan, and Hermès puts a limit on how many will be made each year. The boutiques then receive only a few Birkins every month, making them a scarce commodity. Then comes the strict client selection process, where the brand chooses whether or not you’re eligible to make the purchase and carry a history with you.

But why does the brand do this?

A Birkin is not just another handbag, but it’s a legit investment that can appreciate over time. Thus, to maintain its exclusivity and make it desirable, the brand creates a mystique around the process of purchasing. There is no public price list, as the brand does not advertise or display them in stores. You cannot purchase a Birkin bag, as it is only found in physical stores after months and sometimes years of waiting. Also, if you have VIP privileges, only then will the store personally offer a quota bag, but they usually turn away first-time buyers.

The fame game drama

Fashion icon Victoria Beckham owns around 100 Birkin bags, but she still had to build a strong relationship with the brand over time. Next is Kim Kardashian, who had to spend years buying other Hermès products before she got her first Birkin bag. Even global icons like Lady Gaga had to wait for a year, as she was a first-time buyer for her customised Hermès order, proving that the brand remains true to its luxury status and never bends over for anyone.

Final thoughts

The iconic Birkin bag was designed in 1984 and was created after actress Jane Birkin met the CEO of Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas. Since then, it has become the king of luxury handbags with a waiting list that stretches more than a year. Recently, the original Hermès Birkin bag, which was the prototype for the iconic line, was sold at a Sotheby's auction in Paris for a record-breaking deal of $10.1 million, i.e., INR 87.41 crores. The bag was purchased by an unidentified private collector from Japan. After an intense bidding war that involved nine collectors, the winning bid was placed over the phone, which changed the history.
