Brides who ditched trends for timeless heirloom sparkle

The desire for brand-new, customised jewellery is often every bride’s dream for her wedding day, meant to match the grandeur of her stunning ensemble. However, a family heirloom, such as a bridal ornament belonging to your mother or mother-in-law, can also complement your dream attire perfectly, making the look intimate, emotional, and nostalgic. This small choice symbolizes the generational bond within the family and the love you receive as you become the newest addition. This trend of heirloom jewellery has been wholeheartedly embraced by Bollywood brides, with some A-listers choosing their bridal pieces from their mother’s, grandmother’s, or mother-in-law’s collection. Let’s take a look at some examples.

Kareena Kapoor Khan

Kareena Kapoor Khan’s transformation into the Begum of Pataudi began in 2012, when she married Saif Ali Khan in Sharmila Tagore’s bridal trousseau. Bebo chose to wear her mother-in-law’s nikah outfit with matching jewellery from 1962. She donned the rust-orange traditional sharara suit with heavily embroidered gold zari, paired with a contrasting mint-green sharara revived by designer Ritu Kumar. Kareena didn’t stop there; she completed the look with the same traditional choker necklace, matching dangling earrings, stacks of bangles, and a stunning passa, worn as a maangtika by Sharmila Tagore during her wedding.

Soha Ali Khan

Saif Ali Khan’s younger sister, Soha Ali Khan, married Kunal Kemmu in a beautiful customised Sabyasachi ensemble dipped in ivory-gold and paired with a light orange dupatta. Her iconic jewellery, including a passa with an emerald-green beaded raanihaar and matching earrings, belonged to her mother’s heritage collection and has been in the family for generations. This statement piece was even previously worn by Kareena Kapoor Khan.

Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor’s 2018 big-fat Bollywood wedding was the talk of the town. The weekend-long celebrations saw the bride undergo several outfit changes, looking like a queen in every piece. For her white-themed sangeet, Sonam wore a stunning ivory lehenga by Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla with intricate gold embroidery, paired with a glasswork kundan-vintage necklace, matching earrings, and a maang-tikka set, all of which belonged to her mother.

Konkona Sen Sharma

Konkona Sen Sharma married actor Ranvir Shorey in 2010 in an intimate ceremony that reflected her minimalist, monochrome fashion aesthetic. She wore a gold silk lehenga with a matching kundan jewellery set inherited from her grandmother. The set included a layered necklace with matching earrings, offering a timeless and elegant touch to her wedding ensemble.

Neha Dhupia

Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi had a hush-hush wedding, where the bride stole the show in a blush pink Anita Dongre lehenga. What truly stood out was her kundan pearl choker set and a statement vintage ring, heirloom pieces from the groom’s family. They symbolized her acceptance into the big Punjabi family, beautifully adorning her wedding day and making it even more special.
