For all the confused collectors

Some fashion vixens always get confused between the classifications of antique, vintage, and retro. The definitions are quite time-oriented, but in the segment of handbags and purses, many factors depend on the valuation of one’s arm candy. The material, quality, and rarity, as well as the designer status and age of a purse, also contribute to its value. Let’s take a deeper look and understand the difference between antique, vintage, and retro eras.

2/7

What is an antique?

The word ‘antique’ comes from the Latin word ‘antiquus,’ which means old. An antique is a piece of decor that is primarily a work of art and was made in a different period. Something that was found more than 100 years ago can be called an antique. In 2025, an item would need to be made in 1925 or earlier to be called an antique. Handbags used before 1925 can be termed antique pieces and should hold great value today.

What is vintage?

The definition of vintage is a bit less concrete than antique. Items falling in the range of 20 to 99 years old can be noted as vintage pieces. Vintage items generally evoke a feeling of personal nostalgia and may be kept as a treasure. Using your mother’s outfits from the 1960s era can be termed “vintage wear. It may be a collectible item for you and can generally be passed from generation to generation.

What is retro?

Retro has nothing to do with when an item was made, but it just means that the item looks old. You can buy retro outfits, handbags, and other accessories that may have a different fashion aesthetic and look more vintage or antique with time. Retro items are inspired by looking back at the fashion of the past era and then bringing back the old style into the future. However, as we get closer to the modern day, the line between vintage and retro is becoming a lot blurrier.

Antique vs Vintage

The vintage era differs from the antique because of its age. Vintage items are 20 to 99 years old, but an antique handbag should be at least 100 years old. For instance, a luxury Italian bag from the 1960s would be vintage, but if it is from the 1910s, then it is an antique. The midcentury modern era, which is the 1930s to 1970s, falls into the category of vintage. However, the Victorian era, i.e., from 1837 to 1901, which included Victorian floral prints and silhouettes, came under the antique genre. Both eras will have a history and story, but the timing and style of work will matter a lot.

Vintage vs retro

As we know, items that are 20 to 99 years old can be termed as vintage. However, retro items can only be seen as old and evoke a sense of nostalgia but without actually coming from the bygone era. Retro items are more affordable, and vintage deals make a great choice for someone who wants to achieve a vintage look on a budget. Retro and vintage items are the easiest to blend because they both are meant to look old but in fashion.

Retro vs antique

Antiques are usually 100 years old, but retro items simply look old. Antiques are decades older, but retro items mimic a style of the past and act as a hoax. Modern-day Polaroids are a great example of retro items, as they are made to look like the Polaroid cameras of the 1980s. Although antique and retro come from different periods, the two might look good together in the same way vintage and antique can look good together. Amidst all the chaos, one should clarify the time of creation and take a keen look at the style.
