Kurtis have been a staple in ethnic wear for a long time, showcasing a variety of designs, prints, and motifs that are loved worldwide. Perfect for both special occasions and everyday wear, they offer a stylish yet comfortable traditional option. But do you know what’s even more relaxing and chic than a kurti? A kaftan. With its flowy structure and relaxed fit, a kaftan lets you effortlessly balance fashion and comfort while styling it for any occasion. If you’re feeling bored with your usual kurtis, this festive season is the perfect time to switch things up and try a kaftan instead. Here’s how you can do it.

2/6

Method 1: Add the side slits

Simply add the side slits of your kurti for a kaftan-like look. As these designs are free, easy, and airy, a simple stitch on each side of your kurta will give you the sense of flow and comfort. Put on your kurti and check whether you want a slit kaftan or a stitched one. Accordingly, cut or stitch the sides, but try to keep the side higher if you’re opting for a slit kaftan look. Once decided, with scissors or with a sewing machine, finish the edges neatly and add a drawstring in the middle to get the ultimate look.

Method 2: Lose the sleeves

If you wish to create a two-in-one look, then opt for an oversized kurta with flowy sleeves, which should look comfortable and stylish. If your kurti has fitted sleeves, then replace them with bell sleeves or wide kimono-style sleeves to get that kaftan look. Although be careful along the seams. Also, in this case, the fabric matters the most. Opt for something that is lightweight, and choose a flowy material like chiffon, rayon, or georgette to get the look.

Method 3: Add a waist tie

Add a waist tie or sash at the back, which can actually define the shape of the bodice without losing the relaxed silhouette. If your kurti is too straight or boxy for you, then this little tailoring trick can transform your look and figure, making the appearance flattering. You can enjoy the kaftan vibe while showing your classy side. Just decide on the type of waist you would like and attach it from the back, making it look classy and charming.

Method 4: The neckline makeover

If your kurti is too boring, then start with the neckline first and transform it into a deep V-neckline. Changing the neckline not only modernises the look but also improves the airy and flowy style, which kaftans are known for. Just decide the shape, depth, and design, and before cutting, make sure that its symmetry is equal and balanced. Start with the markings and then move on to the cutting and stitching part.

Method 5: Add some side pockets

Kaftans usually come with flowy, big pockets, which are missing in kurtas and create a huge difference. To create side pockets, carefully open the side seams or use the slit edges if you have already added the side slits. Cut the pocket pieces and stitch them securely inside the seams. Just make sure that the pockets are deep enough to be useful and are not just for show or look too bulky.
