Why do these textiles matter?

While the fashion world leans toward fast-forward trends, these textiles offer something rare. They carry cultural continuity, a sense of depth, and, of course, a legacy of rural craftsmanship. Bengal’s textile legacy goes beyond the obvious icons; it encompasses technique, quiet luxury, and rich history. However, it rarely ever got the spotlight that it deserved. So, if you’re looking for unique pieces to invest in your wardrobe, try these underrated textiles that surely deserve your attention.

Baluchari saree

Often overshadowed by louder silks, Baluchari comes with a story woven into the fabric. Found in the suburbs of Bishnupur, these silk sarees are known for mythological scenes like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, which are usually woven into the pallu. They’re crafted on jacquard looms and are known for their rich, heritage-driven motifs.

Jamdani

Jamdani is now globally recognised, but it is still under-celebrated compared to the other textiles and is known for its light and breathable quality with an incredibly detailed touch. It is made using a labour-intensive handloom technique, which creates a floating motif and looks like an ultra-fine muslin base with embroidered patterns, wherein in Bengal it is known to be a breathable luxury wear.

Garad silk

Garad silk is known for its minimal yet powerful quality, which is deeply tied to Bengali rituals and festivals. Known for its off-white base with red borders, it carried a subtle elegance. The symbolic cultural importance of this textile makes it a masterclass in understated fashion, and the undyed-natural silk body is to die for.

Kantha embroidery

More than just embroidery, Kantha is a storytelling fabric that tells tales through stitches. Traditionally made by layering old fabrics and stitching them together, each piece carries a personal and almost poetic history. From sustainable and upcycled origins, it is hand-stitched and features unique designs.

Tangail drape

Tangail is often mistaken as a mainstream pick, but the weavers don’t get the recognition they deserve. This textile is known for its fine cotton texture with delicate motifs that strike the perfect balance between comfort and, of course, craft. Its soft and airy everyday elegance, with subtle zari charm and thread motifs, works perfectly for summer and, of course, for everyday grace as well.
