A rich showcase of Odisha’s culture

The eighth-largest state of India, Odisha, is not just Lord Jagannath’s abode but is also a land steeped in culture and heritage. Known for its exquisite cuisine and handwoven sarees, the generational fashion sense is a testament to the skills and craftsmanship of its weavers. The sarees found in this region not only reflect the rich traditions but also talk about the ingenuity and regal tales of the artisans. Let’s dive deep and take a look at 5 popular handloom sarees of Odisha, which capture the essence of this Eastern state.

Bomkai saree

Originating from the small village of Bomkai, in Ganjam district, this handloom saree is a true masterpiece. Known for its intricate threadwork and woven on handlooms, it captures the true artistry of the state. Bomkai sarees are made by using the extra weft technique, which adds depth and a sleek dimension to the saree. The border and pallu designs adorned with clean threadwork are the key epitome of charm found only in a Bomkai.

Ikat saree

Ikat or Sambalpuri Ikat sarees, also known as Bandha sarees in Odisha, exude a symphony of colours and traditional motifs. These sarees are tie-dyed before weaving, whereas the saree’s warp and weft carry deep symbolism and include shankha, chakra, and phula designs, representing the Odia culture. The intricate Bandhakala, or the tie-dye work, is another labour-intensive process that results in unique weaves and was also adorned by India’s late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Dhalapathar Saree

The Dhalapathar saree hails from the Khurdha Dhalapathar village and is a testimony to the unmatched skills of the weavers of the area. These sarees are woven without jala, jacquard, or dobby and exhibit intricate designs like Nahati and Kusumi Kapta. These iconic masterpieces are woven using a wooden stick, which is known as ‘Chiari’, which helps the creation of sharp and very accurate motifs and prints.

Pasapalli Saree

Pasapali, or Saktapar, saree is a unique Bandha handloom creation from Bargarh. Its name is derived from the traditional gambling games, mirroring the intricate check patterns that resemble a chessboard-like print. The craftsmanship and unique design set are a true representation of the state’s artistic heritage and require more recognition.

Kotpad Saree

The Kotpad handloom saree is a product created by the Mirgan tribal weavers in Koraput, who celebrate nature by including the vegetable-dyed fabric on the sarees. These solid border cotton sarees perfectly capture the weaving prowess of this small community. It is also a proud epitome, as Kotpad handloom fabric became Odisha’s first item to receive the prestigious Geographical Indication tag and is practised to date with great enthusiasm.
