Exclusive Interview with Gazal Gupta: Insights into Her Creative Process.


Q. What challenges did you face when starting your career at a young age?


A: Starting at an age when most kids were full-time students was uncommon in those days. Even I wasn’t sure how things would turn out. There were a lot of challenges, including but not limited to resources, finances, guidance, etc. Yet, I believe what pulled me through is the belief in myself, perseverance & the joy in doing whatever I did.


Q: Can you describe how your career started and the journey it has taken?


A: I began as a one-person operation, packaging wedding trousseaus, and quickly fell in love with the craft. Soon, I was designing trousseaus for others, and before long, we had grown into a team of over 400 artisans, all united by a shared vision of bringing ideas to life by enriching the lives of each one who touches the product, that was once an idea, in any way whatsoever.

Q. How has your drive for creativity shaped your life & organization?


A. Creativity, at its core, is a call for those who refuse to conform to existing standards. It’s the innate desire to view the world differently that sparks the courage to create something new. At Gazal Gupta, this is our guiding principle we strive to bring forth something fresh and unseen every single day.

Q: What sets your designs apart?


A: We are committed to drawing inspiration from within. In my experience, when you stay true to your ideas and respect them, you begin to see design everywhere. Inspiration flows naturally, and what you create becomes a reflection of that honesty. This authenticity ensures each design is original and unique, which is what I believe sets one designer apart from another.


Q: How do you stay informed about the latest trends?


A: It’s hard not to stay informed, but the challenge lies in navigating the overwhelming flow of information. Rather than getting lost in the noise, I focus on filtering out distractions and asking the right questions. In today’s world, knowing which questions to ask is often more valuable than having all the answers.

Q: Can you tell me about a particularly successful design or collection you've created?


A: One of our most successful collections was a Couture line that marked a significant shift for us. Traditionally, we focused on hand embroidery, but this collection involved merging print with Couture, which was a departure from our usual approach. Stepping out of my comfort zone to blend these elements was a bold move, and the results were exceptional. I’m particularly proud of this collection because it represented a transformative change in our design DNA and showcased our ability to innovate while staying true to our craftsmanship.

Q: How do you balance creativity with commercial viability in your work?


A: By ensuring that our designs address a genuine need and align with the right market fit, we find that product relevance naturally leads to commercial success. Paying attention to the Product, Place & Price —helps us create designs that are both innovative and commercially viable. When the product meets these criteria, it tends to become commercially successful on its own.



Q: What are some common misconceptions about your niche, and how do you address them?


A: That it’s all about glamour. In reality, it's like any other job and involves significant hard work, especially on the business side. This aspect often includes tasks that may seem mundane but mastering these “boring” tasks is crucial for success.


Additionally, there's a belief that couture's high price tags mean you must make extreme sacrifices to afford it. We address this by ensuring that while couture is an investment, it should not be prohibitively expensive.

Q. Your work is proudly endorsed by renowned Bollywood celebrities, influencers, and some of the best-known figures in the industry. Can you elaborate on some of the collaborations?


A. We are deeply grateful when celebrities choose us, as they each have an inspiring story, and we're proud to be a small part of it. This is especially true in our Bollywood collaborations, where we've had the honor of working with some of the industry's most talented individuals.

Q: Despite not participating in mainstream fashion shows, how do you manage to thrive in the industry?


A: Our label, which began in 2015, is backed by extensive experience that started when I was just 14. While people may only see the label now, I’ve spent nearly two decades building my craft and understanding the industry.


We’re committed to continuous improvement and exploring new opportunities, both domestically and internationally. While I remain open to future participation in fashion weeks, my continuous focus is on delivering the best experience for our clients.

Q: Can you give us an overview of your brand’s milestones and upcoming projects?


A :2015: We opened our first Gazal Gupta store in Shahpur Jat (Delhi)

• 2017: Launched our flagship store in Kila, Mehrauli (Delhi)
• 2019: Expanded our workplace by consolidating our production and headquarters, streamlining operations from various workshops.
• 2020: Launched our official, Gazal Gupta website.
• 2021: Opened our first store in Bombay at Kala Godha and our first dedicated Pret store at Dhan Mill, New Delhi.
• 2022: Introduced our second store focused on suits in Shahpur Jat, and our flagship couture store in Kala Godha, Mumbai.
• 2023: Expanded to the South with our first flagship store in Hyderabad.
• 2024: We’re thrilled to announce an exciting development: we’ll be launching a large-format showroom dedicated to Pret and Demi-Couture, featuring categories never seen before. Stay tuned for more details!

Q: With travel restrictions and a global shutdown in 2020, what motivated you to expand outside Delhi?


A: When we first launched our website during Covid, the data we collected from our online engagement was eye-opening and demonstrated a strong demand pan India. This clear and compelling data drove us to open a store in the next biggest city- Mumbai.





Q: What was your experience like opening the Hyderabad showroom in April 2023?


A: It was a dream, I hadn’t even dreamt off, yet it came true. It was such an immersive and fulfilling experience to conceptualise and launch the Hyderabad flagship store in just 90 days that it still feels like a dream. I guess, it is the love of all the lovely people of that city that made this happen and made us the talk of the town. All I can say is, a BIG THANK YOU! & we are proud of our Hyderabad flagship store.




Q: How have you managed to excel in the fashion field despite not having a traditional background in it?


A: I believe that true learning comes from applying knowledge practically. Knowledge gained or a book read is nothing without the application of wisdom derived from it. I am a person who is forever curious. I believe this innate ability to quickly apply what I learn has significantly impacted my professional journey in a positive and satisfying way.

Q: What are your thoughts on sustainability and ethical practices in fashion?


A: Both are extremely dear to us. We employ upcycling techniques, incorporating trinkets and accessories into our designs to make the most of the material waste generated during manufacturing. We ensure that almost nothing or very little goes to waste and maintain a sustainable approach throughout our process.
