Sabyasachi brings quiet power to the Met Gala 2025

1/5

A masterclass in understated elegance

Sabyasachi Mukherjee knows how to make a statement - this time, he just did it with a lot less noise. For his second Met Gala appearance, the celebrated Indian designer flipped the script on his signature maximalism and delivered a masterclass in subtle, thoughtful fashion. The result? A look that oozed confidence, culture, and craftsmanship without shouting for attention.

2/5

A regal yet relaxed silhouette

Instead of going the ultra-ornate route, Sabyasachi kept it sharp and clean. He built his look around timeless menswear staples: a crisp white shirt, a softly structured trench, and a flowing overcoat that gave just the right amount of drama. Paired with tailored high-waisted black trousers, the entire outfit struck that perfect balance between regal and relaxed. It was classic, but with a quiet edge - like someone who knows they’re important without having to prove it.

3/5

Luxe accessories that whisper, not shout

And then came the accessories. True to form, Sabyasachi didn’t hold back on the details. A bold choker added some flair, without overpowering the look. Multiple rings added a dose of personality (and just the right amount of bling), while his sleek headgear, crowned with a delicate brooch, served as the cherry on top. It wasn’t loud, but it was luxe.

4/5

The deeper inspiration: Power through style

The inspiration behind the look? Deeper than you might think. In an Instagram post following his appearance, Sabyasachi reflected on the theme of “Black Dandyism” and how it intersects with Indian history. He drew parallels between this bold form of self-expression and the legacy of Jamsetji Tata - the legendary founder of the Taj hotels, who built a world-class hotel in response to being denied entry to a “Whites only” colonial club.

“Black dandyism originated as a form of self-expression to defy societal, racial and gendered norms,” Sabyasachi wrote. “Within an Indian context, I think of Jamsetji Tata... who was denied entry to Watson’s Hotel in Bombay. That experience led him to build the world renowned Taj Mahal Palace hotel as a symbol of resistance and empowerment.”

5/5

The loud impact of quiet fashion

In a sea of extravagance, Sabyasachi stood out by pulling back. His Met Gala 2025 look reminded us that style doesn’t always need to scream. Sometimes, the most powerful statements are the ones whispered with elegance.
