Rama Duwaji: New York's stylish First Lady

When Zohran Mamdani made history as New York City’s 111th mayor becoming the first Muslim and one of the youngest ever to hold the office, all eyes were on him. But someone else quietly stole the fashion spotlight: his wife, Rama Duwaji. The 28-year-old Syrian-American artist, now the city’s youngest First Lady, proved that you don’t need glitter or grandeur to make a lasting impression. Her understated yet deeply meaningful style did all the talking.

The look that spoke without words

At the Brooklyn Paramount Theatre, where the victory celebrations unfolded, Rama walked in wearing an all-black outfit that was far from ordinary. As an artist, she clearly understands that visuals tell stories and every element of her ensemble had purpose. From her choice of designer to the texture of her fabrics, Rama’s look reflected confidence, culture, and consciousness.

A Palestinian designer with a powerful message

For her top, Rama turned to Palestinian-Jordanian designer Zeid Hijazi, whose work draws inspiration from Palestinian folklore and rebellion. It wasn’t just a fashion choice, it was a statement of identity and solidarity. The blouse, crafted from laser-etched denim featured tatreez motifs, merged sustainability with structure. With its sleeveless design, boat neckline, and asymmetric hem, the piece perfectly embodied modern minimalism with a touch of rebellion.

Velvet, lace, and a hint of romance

Balancing the sharp edges of her blouse, Rama chose a velvet lace skirt from New York’s beloved label Ulla Johnson. Known for its free-spirited, handcrafted aesthetic, the skirt featured floral embroidery and scalloped detailing. Its fluid silhouette softened the look, giving her ensemble just the right blend of art and emotion.

Finishing touches with subtle strength

Rama kept her styling minimal but expressive. A dainty black scarf draped across her arms and silver spike earrings from Eddie Borgo added personality without overpowering the look. Her makeup was fresh and natural - glossy pink lips, kohl-rimmed eyes, and softly flushed cheeks - while her short, side-parted hair framed her face with quiet grace.

Style that carries meaning

Choosing a Palestinian designer for such a milestone moment wasn’t just about fashion, it was about connection. Rama’s look reflected solidarity, heritage, and thoughtfulness. It was a subtle nod to cultural resilience and representation, woven beautifully into the fabric of her celebration.

The art of thoughtful dressing

As Zohran Mamdani celebrated his historic win, Rama Duwaji celebrated something just as significant, the art of meaningful style. Her look was not loud, but it lingered in memory. With calm confidence and quiet symbolism, she reminded us that the most powerful fashion moments aren’t always the flashiest, they’re the most intentional.

How the duo met

Zohran Mamdani, 34, who is of Indian origin, first crossed paths with 28-year-old Rama Duwaji on the dating app Hinge in 2021. After a few years of dating, the couple got engaged in October 2024. Two months later, they celebrated their love with a nikah and engagement ceremony in Dubai, the city where Duwaji grew up and where her family continues to live.

The civil wedding

Zohran and Rama’s love story took a beautifully understated turn with their quiet civil wedding ceremony at the New York City Hall in February 2025. The intimate affair reflected their shared preference for simplicity and authenticity, with just close family in attendance.

Balance of love and tradition

Later, in July 2025, the couple hosted a vibrant celebration in Uganda, blending modern elegance with cultural warmth. The Ugandan festivities were a heartfelt nod to their global journey together, a perfect balance of love, tradition, and the joy of shared beginnings.

Engagement at Dubai Creek

In a dreamy garden-themed rooftop affair overlooking Dubai Creek Harbour, the couple got engaged in late 2024, followed by a beautiful Nikkah ceremony.

12/13

Why did she choose this outfit?

If you have been following Zohran Mamdani, you must know that he has always spoken in favour of Gaza in the Israel-Palestinian War that began on October 7, 2023. This situation took more than 70,000 lives, on both sides combined. By wearing this stunning piece of clothing, she proved to continue her support, which also made things very clear how the duo stands politically opposite to that of Prime Minister Donald Trump.

What's her background?

Rama Duwaji is a Syrian-American artist whose story spans continents and communities. Born in Houston in 1997 to Syrian immigrant parents, she grew up partially in Dubai before pursuing formal art education in the US earning a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and later a MFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her work, encompassing illustration, animation and ceramics, centres on themes of Arab identity, migration and social justice, and has been featured in outlets like The New Yorker, BBC and the Tate Modern. Beyond her artistic career, Duwaji gained wider attention as the partner of Zohran Mamdani, New York’s newly-elected mayor; the two met via a dating app in 2021 and married in early 2025. With Mamdani’s landmark win, Rama steps into a role of greater public visibility while continuing to define herself through her art and advocacy.

There has never existed any sovereign state called Palestine at any time or place on Earth. There once used to be an administrative region called the British Mandate of Palestine, which consisted of the combined land area of today's Israel and Jordan. That region was divided to form the countries we know today as Israel and Jordan. The so-called Palestine we hear about a lot in the news nowadays is a fabrication and fraud made up by the Egyptian terrorist Yasser Arafat just to harass Israel and the Jews. People please don't get taken in by the antics of people like Mamdani and other propagandists.
