Dress to Impress

The US Presidential elections have taken center stage, with the media obsessing over every move of the candidates — Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Every small move is being analyzed for potential political statements, and it wouldn’t be a lie to say that fashion is political too. If we go back in history, the evolution of dressing styles explains the socio-cultural context of each era. While some styles make overt political statements on class, religion, nationalism, sexuality, and gender, others are more subtle. Dressing up is intentional, and we all practice this daily. So when it comes to political leaders, who are fighting to win power for the ideology they believe in, a lot more mental gymnastics go into deciding what to wear. Millions of people are watching the debates on television and catching a glimpse of their favorite leaders. The battle lines are drawn, with each putting their best foot forward, including dressing to impress. This is not the first time that US political leaders are being scrutinized for their sense of fashion; US presidents have been dressing to impress for years now. They all realize the importance of looking presentable. Let’s take a look at 7 US Presidents who had an impeccable sense of style.

Barack Obama

The 44th President of the United States had a simple yet effective sense of dressing. It was always the same: a two-button, single-breasted suit jacket and single-pleated pants. Even when casual, he would simply get rid of the jacket and roll up his shirt sleeves. This simple yet classic dressing style was refreshing and reflected his personality. Barack Obama was highly educated, belonging to the erudite class, while at the same time being a man of the people. His casual nonchalance with suits — nothing too flashy — meant that he did the talking, and his clothes didn’t need to.

John F Kennedy

John came from a political family that was always economically secure. His sense of style seemed to have been influenced by that upbringing. As the youngest President of the US, he oozes charm, beauty, and power. The media loved him, and so did voters. From the flashy rock era to minimalism, Kennedy adapted to changing fashion trends. He was comfortable in both polo shirts and tailored, crisp suits. As President, he dressed with sophistication but added charm with a hint of casualness, reminding everyone of his young age.

George W Bush

George dressed to fit into two boxes: the first included his wealthy peers from the conservative party, and the second was the voter base, where he aimed at — Middle Americans. To appeal to both sides, he paired his oversized suits with cowboy boots. His term was full of conflicts and economic upheavals, and he is mostly remembered for his decision to invade Iraq in 2003.

Jimmy Carter

Jimmy Carter is lovingly remembered as the “Sweater Man.” He loved his sweaters and was probably the first American President to make his first official appearance in front of the nation wearing a sweater. His love for sweaters came from his background; before becoming President, he was a peanut farmer. He established his identity with pride. On occasions when he wore suits, they featured big-lapel jackets paired with pants.

Richard Nixon

Nixon’s term was controversial, and he had to resign before he could be impeached. He ran for the Presidential election twice, losing to the young John F. Kennedy the first time. Nixon’s campaign was hectic, and this was reflected in his presentation during debates. When he did win the election, his style lacked personal touch. It was the usual "tailored suit," but it worked for him.

Ronald Reagen

Ronald Reagan had quite a wardrobe, and that was a matter of great curiosity for both the public and the press. Reagan dressed to impress and understood the importance of dressing properly to command the room. The media was obsessed with the way the Reagan family dressed. Their sense of style represented an ideal and a vision that was perfect, and people wanted to be a part of it.

Theodore Roosevelt

Roosevelt, the 26th President of America, brought his military persona to the White House with him. His cane, hats, vest jacket, and pocket watch contributed to and accentuated his commanding presence. He wore his 20th-century tailored suits with pride.
