The Met Gala: Theme, History and dress code

Every spring, the world’s biggest celebrities descend on the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City — not just to walk a red carpet, but to make fashion history. The Met Gala isn't just a party; it’s where art meets clothing, tradition clashes with rebellion, and some of the most unforgettable looks are born from pure risk.
This year, all eyes are on the 2025 Met Gala, taking place on Monday, May 5, with a theme that marks a major shift: for the first time in over two decades, the spotlight is entirely on menswear — and more specifically, on Black style.

With Pharrell Williams and Lewis Hamilton serving as co-chairs, the evening will honor the Costume Institute’s new exhibit, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, which draws inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s influential book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.
This year's dress code, "Tailored for You," challenges guests to reinterpret tailoring through personal expression, cultural history, and contemporary style. According to Gala committee member Usher, the theme is “not only timely, but also speaks to our rich culture that should always be widely celebrated.”
As designers, stylists, and stars get ready for the biggest night in fashion, one thing’s for sure: some of the most memorable looks will come from those bold enough to take risks — and pull them off.

Rihanna – 2015: "China: Through the Looking Glass"

Rihanna’s 2015 Met Gala look became an instant viral sensation, cementing its place in pop culture history. The singer stunned in a dramatic, heavily embroidered yellow velvet cape by Chinese designer Guo Pei, a piece that weighed around 25 kilograms. The dress featured over 50,000 hours of hand embroidery, showcasing intricate craftsmanship and artistry, according to The Guardian. Its grand scale and sweeping train sparked a wave of internet memes, with social media users comparing the look to everything from a giant omelet to a pizza base, and even the yellow brick road from The Wizard of Oz.

Priyanka Chopra – 2019: "Camp: Notes on Fashion"

Priyanka Chopra’s 2019 Met Gala look was one of her boldest and most theatrical appearances ever. Fully embracing the theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” she wore a dramatic Dior dress that was anything but ordinary. The outfit featured a colorful feathered skirt, layers of tulle in shades of grey, pink, yellow, and red, and a flowing cape. It took 1,500 hours to make. On her head, she wore a silver cage-like crown, giving off a wild, whimsical vibe—some even compared her look to characters like the Mad Hatter or Effie Trinket. Her makeup was just as daring, with frosted silver eyelashes, bright raspberry eyeshadow, and bold lipstick. While the look sparked plenty of memes and mixed opinions online, there’s no doubt Priyanka went all-in on the theme.

Kim Petras – 2021: "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion"

For her Met Gala debut in 2021, pop star Kim Petras made a bold entrance that got everyone talking. She wore a Collina Strada gown with a giant 3D horse head as the bodice, paired with a printed pannier-style skirt. The look definitely embraced the campy and theatrical vibe of the theme, but many felt it crossed the line from high fashion into full-on costume. While eye-catching, it stirred debate over whether it was daring or just plain over-the-top.

At the 2019 Met Gala, which celebrated the theme "Camp: Notes on Fashion," Zendaya embraced the fairy tale with a Cinderella-inspired look. She wore a custom, light-up Tommy Hilfiger ball gown and was accompanied by her stylist Law Roach, dressed as a fairy godmother, who "activated" the gown with a wand. Katy Perry went all out for the 2018 Met Gala, perfectly capturing the “Heavenly Bodies” theme, which explored the connection between Catholicism and fashion. Dressed as a dramatic angel, she wore towering golden wings so massive that she had to arrive at the Metropolitan Museum with half her body sticking out of a convertible. Just before that, she was seen casually walking through the streets of New York in full costume, leaving passers bewildered.
