Is Mysore silk the new Birkin of India? Why women are queuing at 4 AM for these ₹2.5 lakh sarees

India’s new status symbol is here

At 4 AM, when most cities are still wrapped in sheets, long queues outside Bangalore’s Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation showroom have become the new normal. Here, women are absolutely unapologetic about lining up for none other than Mysore silk sarees, which come with a hefty price tag of around Rs 2.5 lakh. This price surge and demand for Mysore silk raise the question: has this silhouette become India's new Birkin?

The power of legacy

If you think people are just gaga over Banarasi and Kanjeevaram silk, you’re highly mistaken. Women, specifically in the South, are obsessed with Mysore silk drapes. These sarees are produced by Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation, established in 1912 under the rule of the Maharaja of Mysore. Unlike other trend-driven luxury silhouettes, Mysore silk has its own credibility; each drape includes pure mulberry silk and real gold zari, which is certified and tested. Therefore, the high price is justified.

But why this high demand?

This is simple economics. Mysore silk has become an epitome of luxury, and luxury thrives on limited availability. Pure Mysore silk drapes are not mass-produced and are not available instantly. The process usually requires gold zari costs, which fluctuate according to the market and are based on bullion prices. So, limited stock drops create this urgency, similar to Birkin bags, which are known for their long waiting lists.

But is it worth an investment?

A Rs 2.5 lakh Mysore silk drape is valued not just for the fabric but for the genuine gold and silver threads used in the zari. The rise in the market price of gold increases the saree’s value over time. So, yes, it is definitely an investment and a perfect family heirloom which can be used in bridal trousseaus, during the festive season, and more.

So, is it the new Birkin in India?

Considering scarcity, high price points, long queues, status signalling, and cultural symbolism, the Birkin phenomenon certainly exists in India. But, unlike a handbag, Mysore silk sarees carry a deeper meaning. It is less about fashion and exclusivity but more about preserving the culture, gold value, craft, and above all, the identity. This is why women standing in 4 AM queues are unapologetic, as they are not just purchasing a saree but a legacy drenched in gold.
