A wedding without gold: This Ahmedabad bride broke traditional Indian bridal norms by ditching gold jewellery - Here’s why
Gold in Indian weddings is not new; it’s a tradition that goes back centuries. In several Indian texts, gold stands for purity and cosmic power. It is called ‘swarna’, meaning ‘the best’, indicating its sacred value. From heavy necklaces to a stack of bangles, it is hard for a bride to imagine her wedding day without beautiful gold jewellery. It has stood as the epitome of wealth, status, and security. But when its sacred value becomes a burden, things can turn sour. So, the younger generation is breaking this traditional wheel and setting new trends for the wedding season.
Content creator Pankti Pandey shared a series of pictures from her sister’s wedding, which revealed something personal, bold, and honest. It was a wedding without gold. It might sound odd to some, but the practical reason behind it shocked the internet, where many applauded the decision of the couple and the family.
Pankti explained that she and her sister Nishtha are both financially independent and chose not to purchase gold, as they didn’t wish to burn through their own savings or their father’s hard-earned money. She made it quite clear that her family embraced tradition and respected those who wore gold on their wedding day. On her Instagram post, she said, “We are not against gold, and we deeply respect those who love and value it. It's just that we were never fond of owning it. Most of the gold in our family stays in lockers, rarely worn, even on the wedding day.”
Instead of purchasing gold, the content creator and her family decided to invest the amount by putting it in the stock market, gold bonds, and an equity mutual fund. She wrote, “Same love. Same emotion. Just a more intentional form.”
On her post, she wrote, “Of course, there were moments of doubt. Nishtha wondered if the wedding would feel incomplete without gold. But what she felt instead was unexpected – relief, lightness, and peace. No heavy jewellery, no fear about safekeeping, no locker anxiety. What she cherished more was the quiet comfort of knowing that her father's love would continue to grow, protect, and support her – not as jewellery, but as independence, stability, and choice.”
She added, “If this story reaches even one bride who feels empowered to choose what truly matters to her, then it's worth sharing. Because conscious weddings are not about doing less. They are about doing what makes sense.”
Her sister’s story inspired other brides to make choices that feel right for them. It's a reminder that traditions can coexist peacefully with modern choices and a hint of practicality, given the right intention.
