2025, but make it fashion
As we’re almost ready to close the chapter of 2025, let’s rewind and look at some fashion pieces this year that had an understated concept but looked realistically bizarre. The public gave these pieces thumbs down for their over-the-top look. However, the mechanism and complex thoughtfulness showcased the blend of science, art, and technology, which ultimately raised the bar of curiosity and got everyone talking.
Uniforms with built-in electric fans
At the NTT Pavilion during Expo 2025 Osaka, popular fashion brand Anrealage equipped staff uniforms with built-in electric fans, which will push away the heat and bring a functional fashion experience. Inspired by the concept of parallel travel, it featured hundreds of blue dots and consisted of five pieces: an outerwear, a polo shirt, a bag, a hat, and a logo badge. The outerwear mainly had the electric fans, allowing the staff to stay cool while moving around the Expo.

Buzzing puffer jacket for a peaceful nap
This has to be every traveller's dream, which the brand Anrealage made possible. The ZZZN’s sleep apparel system takes this concept of transforming puffer jackets into wearable sleepwear to another level. It uses biometric data monitoring with headphones playing two types of music. The ZZZN puffer jacket modernises Yagi for sleep, a traditional Japanese winter nightwear. You can adjust the sleeves, cuffs, and hemline before you doze off; the jacket also regulates the internal temperature and keeps you warm.

A rice straw-made raincoat
Fabulism’s Chaude Couture transformed rice straws, an ancient organic material, into a raincoat using meticulous weaving. It is a water-repellent raincoat and micro-shelter, inspired by the Berlin-based design practice that rejects plastic-based rainwear and prompts people to opt for natural protective textiles. The entire piece is made of rice straws, but the shape will almost scare you.

Gummy bear Crocs
Crocs’ gummy-inspired collaboration with Haribo has to be the most absurd thing of the year. The collaboration released classic eye-candy footwear, which gave a playful yet over-the-top appearance. The design comes with Jibbitz charms and features oversized gold bears, one of Haribo’s most recognisable symbols. Even the sole of the pair features embossed Goldbears, and this piece is completely water-friendly and lightweight.

Sandals shaped like zigzag paver blocks
The PDM brand takes things to the next level and opted for unisex sandals shaped like zigzag paver blocks, designed so wearers can fill in sidewalk gaps while taking their evening stroll. These chunky, real block-looking sandals come with a cushiony and rubbery material instead of the stone or concrete ones and feature a matching toe strap, which is a tad uncomfortable to look at.
