Happy Krishna Janmashtami

Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated by Hindus all around the world to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna, who is considered to be the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Krishna, fondly known as Kanha or Laddu Gopal was said to have taken birth some 5200 years ago in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh with special powers.

Janmashtami is celebrated on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksha or the 8th day of the dark fortnight in the Hindu month of Bhadon. This year, the day will be celebrated on August 11, which falls on Tuesday.

On this day, Krishna temples are decorated, processions are taken out, people observe fast and dedicate their day to the bhajans and kirtans of the deity.

Dahi Handi is another major attraction celebrated on the second day of Janmashtami in Maharashtra and other westerns states of India. As a kid, Lord Krishna used to steal butter and dahi from people, who would then hide food to tease him. Hence, pots of yogurt or dahi are hung at a height, which is broken by teams of youth called the "Govindas" by forming a human pyramid.

To make this Janmashtami more special for your loved one, send them wishes in different Indian languages:
