Krishna Janmashtami is a festival that holds significant importance for Hindus across the world. The day, which commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna, or Laddu Gopal, who is said to have taken birth around 5200 years ago will be celebrated on August 30, 2021.

History and cultural significance of celebrating Janmashtami
Krishna Janmashtami falls on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksha, or the 8th day in the Hindu month of Bhadon. Lord Krishna, who is hailed as the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu is honoured in all his forms on the occasion of Janmashtmi. Often also called as the 'Lord of Love', the festivities in his honour seldom continue for upto two days, with Krishna temples decorated in beautiful colours, sweets, delicacies and offerings specially prepared for him. The largest celebration of this Hindu festival takes place in Mathura and Vrindavan, where Lord Krishna is believed to have been born and spent his growing up years, respectively.
Devotees also observe a fast, stay up post midnight and tell stories to praise his valour and virtuous life. In some places, a special 'Raas Leela', which retells Lord Krishna's life story through song and dance is also organized. Dahi Handi celebrations, wherein a group of boys form a pyramid-like structure to steal 'makhan', like Laddu Gopal himself is also a commonly cherished part of the celebrations. Most of all, the festival brings the community close and makes us remember and uphold the values he preached throughout his life.
