Halloween 2025 decor ideas: 7 spooky DIY tricks to transform your home this year

One season where the weirdest ideas win? Halloween. The spookier, the better. It’s time to embrace your inner ghost and give your home a wickedly fun makeover. The décor has to scare the bejesus out of people who visit your home. No, decorating your home for Halloween doesn’t necessarily mean emptying your bank account. With a bit of imagination and some household items, you can transform your home into a haunted house. Here are some budget-friendly DIY ideas you can try to bring the eerie mood this Halloween season.

2/8

Try high-tech haunting with holograms

If you want to take the haunting experience a notch further, try holograms. No, you don’t have to spend on expensive tech. You can make them at home, and it won’t cost you a dime. The things you need: a clear plastic takeaway container, clear sheet, scissors, tape or glue, and your smartphone. Cut the plastic sheet into a rectangle that fits inside the container. Place it at a slant and secure it with clear tape or glue. Turn the container upside down and rest your smartphone (screen facing down) on top. Play a ghost hologram video, switch off the lights, and watch spooky figures float in mid-air.

3/8

Spooky firepit

Looking for something unique and realistic? How about a spooky firepit? Don’t worry, your fire alarm won’t go off, because this DIY décor involves no fire or smoke. You will need cardboard (a sturdy piece), insulation foam spray (expanding foam), orange LED string lights or tea lights (battery-operated), a plastic skull and faux bones, red and black spray paint, scissors or a craft knife, a clear work surface, disposable covering (old sheet/newspaper), protective gloves, mask and goggles. Ensure you work outdoors. Start by cutting a piece of cardboard to the desired size. Now wear your protective gear and spray some insulation foam on it. Add the orange lights and place the faux skull and bones. Then cover it with some red spray paint, and use the black in other areas. Cut off the excess cardboard. Plug in the light connected to the décor. At night, it will look even more realistic. You can keep it in your yard or porch, and people will wonder if it’s real!

4/8

Ghostly lanterns

Instead of plain candles, go for lanterns that glow in the dark this year. Use mason jars. Coat the inside of each jar with a thin layer of glow-in-the-dark paint. Then draw scary faces on the outside using a black marker. Put LED tealights inside. You can place the jars on your windowsill or along your walkway to welcome trick-or-treaters with a spooky glow at night.

5/8

Haunted mirror

Transform any mirror in your house into a haunted one. How? Print a light, see-through picture of a ghost or an old portrait and tape it behind the mirror. Now spray a thin layer of grey paint or hairspray on the glass to make it look foggy. When someone walks by, they’ll notice a ghostly figure hiding in the reflection!

6/8

Floating witch hats

Bring a Hogwarts touch to your Halloween celebration. Collect some hats and, using clear fishing line and small hooks, hang them at different heights around your hallway or living room. Now place tea lights inside these hats so they glow. When your guests arrive, they’ll see floating hats hanging from the ceiling.

7/8

Cobweb curtains

If you’re looking for last-minute décor, this one’s for you. You don’t need expensive props – some cotton wool or old white net curtains will do the job. Stretch the cotton wool or net to create a spider-web-like texture. Now attach small toy spiders or bats to it. You can place these cobwebs across doorways or on side tables to create a spooky effect.

8/8

Eerie soundscape

It’s time to put your old speakers to work. Halloween décor is not just about what you see – the right soundscape can set the mood. Set up your old speakers in different parts of your house. Conceal them properly and play faint whispers, creaking doors or distant footsteps to unsettle your guests!
