Tale as old as time

“How does a moment last forever?
How can a story never die?
It is love we must hold onto
Never easy, but we try”.
These eternal lines from the Beauty and the Beast sings of a “tale as old as time” with an unforgettable story to be carried on to generations to come. Love triumphs everything – hate, ugliness, sorrow, and fear. This beautiful story is more than a princess tale. We list out 10 serious life lessons Beauty and the Beast teaches us that can be valued as real gems.

Being different does not mean being a lunatic

Belle is odd from the rest of her village folks. She reads and strives to make other girls learn. But villagers find her funny because she does not blend in with the rest of them. Guess who gets to leave that “provincial town” and live her dreams?

Intellect tops physical strength

Gaston, obsessed with his might and muscularity, is certain that Belle would marry him as all women in the village found him desirable. But his brawny self could only gain bootlickers, whereas Belle, with her intellect was a respected lady among learned folks. She also lifted a terrible curse from the palace while Gaston could only play tricks with his guns and muscles.

Love can set anyone free from the monster residing inside

When the Beast realised his love for Belle, he believed he was not a beast in reality, he only looked like one. He was filled with compassion and felt deeply for his palace servants and Belle and her father. He was finally free from the grouchy, ugly beast from inside of him.

Bestiality is a mindset not a physical attribute

The Beast was charmed under a terrible curse because of his crookedness once upon a time. But as time passed, Belle taught him how to be more compassionate. He saves Belle from hungry wolves risking his own life. But Gaston, even though he was a fair lad, did cunning things to gain Belle’s hand in marriage without her consent. Belle even calls Gaston the real “beast” after he locked up Belle’s father.

Compassion, even at the time of crisis, is essential to be happy

The magical artefacts in the palace, all doomed under the enchantress’s spell, were extremely kind to Belle and wanted the best for her and the Beast. They all loved each other and made Belle feel at ease in the dreary castle. Belle told the Beast once that it was amazing how all of them could learn to love so much even in such sorrow.

If you truly love someone, set them free

When the prince realized he had fallen in love with his captive, Belle, he felt guilty of his behaviour towards her. When he learnt Belle’s father was in trouble, he set her free even though Belle had the key to lift the curse from his castle.

Beauty lies in the heart not on the surface

Belle was a well-learned girl and believed that physical charm has nothing to do with happiness or success. She fell in love with the Beast looking beyond his hideous appearance because of his beautiful soul, and rejected the handsome Gaston because he was all muscles and no brains.

There is never an end to learning

When Belle saw the Beast’s huge library she was engrossed in it. She learnt that as a little prince he had received an expensive education but had stopped after some time. Belle took it upon her to make the Beast read as many books as possible from his library, including her favourite romances.

Love requires us to be fearless

Gaston locked up Belle and her father and set out to fight the Beast to kill him. But Belle, terribly in love with the Beast, was fearless enough to escape and face Gaston and the entire village to save her love from them.

A cup of tea can heal everything

Sometimes all you need to cheer up is a warm cup of tea and a heart-to-heart with Mrs Potts and her son, Chip.
