8 things to do for World Book Day

Today is World book day! While there are ample ways to celebrate on the day itself, there are a few things you can do while building up to it to make it more special for you and for others.

Go through your library and sort out your collection

Most bookworms have more books than their shelves can handle so take advantage of the fact that World Book Day is close to Spring Cleaning and decide which ones you’re like to re-read and want on your shelves and which ones you’re willing to part with.

Find suitable homes for the books

You could gift it to a friend or family member who would enjoy the book more than you. Or you could donate them to a local library. If you have children’s books then there are school libraries, orphanages and plenty of NGOs you can give them to.

Read a book by World Book Day

It doesn’t matter if you’re returning to a classic from your childhood or if you’re trying a new bestseller, the best way to celebrate books is to give them the attention they deserve. So take out some time daily and try to finish a book by then.

Organise a plan for the day with fellow bookworms/your book club

Whether you have a book club or just a few friends who like reading, try and make a plan with them to celebrate. A book discussion, a trip to the book shop, maybe a poetry reading, they are ways to celebrate your love of the written word with the company of people rather than books.

Donate to a literacy charity

The magic of the mental movies being born from ink is the exclusive privilege to those who can read, so donate to a local school or NGO that provides education and literacy.

Inspire a friend to read your favourite book

Whether s/he is an avid reader or someone who’s sick of your book babble, challenge yourself with the task of convincing them to read a favourite of yours.

Add to your collection

Since you made that effort to clean out your shelf and donate books AND it’s world book day, you’ve earned it. Go, buy that copy you've kept in your shopping cart or in the back of your mind for way too long now, and actually start reading it.

Pair your food with your book

It’s always fun to munch on something while reading, but on a special day like today try to make it extra special by eating the cuisine of the place your book is set in, or your characters favourite food.
