The Night Before Christmas by Nikolai Gogol

Written in 1831, this is a classic tale which is read out to kids in Ukrain and Russia on Christmas Eve even now. The story revolves around the battle between Vakula, a blacksmith, and the devil who stole the moon and hid it in his pocket to wreak havoc on Dikanka village. Both Vakula and the devil are in love with the same girl, Oksana who is considered to be the prettiest of all. In order to win her over, the devil unleashes a snowstorm to prevent Vakula's efforts.
