World Environment Day: Thought provoking quotes about nature

Nature is truly one of the biggest muse for literature. The diversity and beauty of nature has inspired many great writers for years. Be it the wonders of the natural world or life lessons we learn from observing it, there's something for everyone to learn from our environment. But unfortunately the capitalist culture that has flourished in the past few decades has irrevocably damaged the planet. And so, to protect and create awareness about the environment, the United Nations General Assembly designated June 5 as World Environment Day in 1972. Since 1974, June 5 has been celebrated by many countries to highlight the concerns about the environment and take steps to save the environment. This year the theme for World Environment Day is 'Time for Nature'. So, here we share some thought-provoking quotes about nature by popular authors for you. Read on!

On life lessons from nature

"The butterfly counts not months but moments; and has time enough."
— Rabindranith Tagore

On nature fulfilling everyone's need

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.”
― Mahatma Gandhi
4/11

On human behaviour

“What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.”
― Chris Maser, Forest Primeval: The Natural History of an Ancient Forest
5/11

On humans destroying nature

“My world, my Earth is a ruin. A planet spoiled by the human species. We multiplied and fought and gobbled until there was nothing left, and then we died. We controlled neither appetite nor violence; we did not adapt. We destroyed ourselves. But we destroyed the world first.”
― Ursula K. Le Guin, The Dispossessed
6/11

On the world being one

“This is our world, although the people who drew this map decided to put their own land on top of ours. There is no top or bottom, you see.”
—Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Half of a Yellow Sun

On healing with nature

“How healing it was to be back at Gombe again, and by myself with the chimpanzees and their forest. I had left the busy, materialistic world so full of greed and selfishness and, for a little while, could feel myself, as in the early days, a part of nature."
—Jane Goodall, Reason for Hope: A Spiritual Journey
8/11

On happiness found in nature

“I felt my lungs inflate with the onrush of scenery—air, mountains, trees, people. I thought, "This is what it is to be happy.”
― Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar
9/11

On nature bringing solace in trouble

“The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quite alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature. As longs as this exists, and it certainly always will, I know that then there will always be comfort for every sorrow, whatever the circumstances may be. And I firmly believe that nature brings solace in all troubles.”
― Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl
10/11

On learning from nature

“Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson

On nature's company

“Not just beautiful, though--the stars are like the trees in the forest, alive and breathing. And they're watching me.”
― Haruki Murakami, Kafka on the Shore
