This is the right way to curl your hair

Get the best cascading curls

Want bouncy curls or effortless beach waves? You must know the right way of curling your hair to make all the difference. From prepping your hair with heat protectant spray to using the curling iron right way, here's a step-by-step guide that ensures you get salon-style curls at home — minus the heat damage and frustration.

2/7

Step 1: Prep your hair

Before you curl your hair, start with clean, dry hair. If you’ve just washed it, make sure it’s completely dry before applying heat. Use a good-quality and dermatologically acclaimed heat protectant spray—it will protect your hair from getting fried by acting like sunscreen for your strands and help prevent breakage.

3/7

Step 2: Choose the right curling tool

Pick a curling wand or curling iron depending on the look you want:

Wider barrels (1.5” and up) will be perfect for you if you want loose, beachy waves. Smaller barrels (around 1”) will give you tighter, defined curls.

Make sure the heat setting is minimal and adjusted based on your hair type:

Fine or damaged hair: 280–300°F (140–150°C)

Normal hair: 300–350°F (150–175°C)

Thick or coarse hair: 350–400°F (175–200°C)

4/7

Step 3: Section your hair

Using a tail comb and section clips, divide your hair into 3–4 horizontal layers. Always start curling your hair from the bottom strands and work your way up. Smaller sections (about 1-inch wide) will give you more lasting and defined curls.

5/7

Step 4: Curl away from your face

For most volume and face-framing layers, wrap a section of hair around the barrel, curling it away from your face. Release gently after holding it for 8–12 seconds depending on your hair thickness. Avoid curling the very ends, as it will make your curls appear natural and pretty.

6/7

Step 5: Cool before touching

While your curls look magnificent right after curling them, do not touch them. Let the curls cool completely before brushing them out or spraying a setting spray or creating a hair style. This helps the curl set in place and last longer. For extra hold, wrap the coils up towards the scalp using a clip. Release them once they cool off.

7/7

Step 6: Finish with the right products

Your curls may unravel faster if you have naturally straight hair. Try to use a light-hold hairspray to set the curls in place. Avoid heavy sprays or serums that can weigh curls down. For soft waves, gently tousle your hair using your fingers or running a wide-toothed comb through your curls. You may also use a dry shampoo and a texturizing spray for extra volume and a lived-in finish.
