Best home remedy for hair growth

Every woman desires long, lustrous hair, but hair loss can be a temporary or sometimes permanent problem. It can stem from hormonal changes or the use of inappropriate hair products and treatments. Witnessing clumps of hair on the floor or dealing with frizzy strands can be disheartening. While diet plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy hair, incorporating a suitable oil into your hair care routine can potentially support hair growth. For ages, people have turned to home remedies like garlic and onion oil for their purported benefits on skin and hair. Let’s compare these two oils to determine which is better for hair maintenance.

Onion oil for hair

The quantity of sulphur present in onion helps in the production of collagen which supports the growth of healthy hair cells. This further stimulates hair growth and also strengthens the hair follicles improving the blood circulation to the hair follicles which thus prevents the issues of hair loss. Using raw onion oil has shown better results rather than using market products with onion oil induced in them and blended with other ingredients.

Garlic oil for hair

Garlic oil also contains sulphur which promotes collagen essential for hair growth. But, garlic contains minerals including selenium and zinc which play an important role in maintaining strong and healthy hair, preventing them from breakage and strengthening the hair strands from the roots. Garlic oil also contains allicin which is a compound stimulating blood circulation and is rich in antifungal and antimicrobial properties that fight the issues of scalp infections, keeping away dandruff and the issues of itchiness.

How to use them at home

Step 1: Extract the juice of garlic and onion by blending or grating them and then strain this mixture via a cheesecloth.
Step 2: You can apply this juice directly, but to cut through the harsh smell of both, opt for a carrier oil such as coconut, olive, or almond oil, and then apply this mixture deep into the roots.
Step 3: Be gentle while massaging and keep this mixture for around 30 minutes. Do not exceed the time duration as the smell can be contagious resulting in itching in the eyes and irritation.
Step 4: To remove the smell use a good shampoo followed by a good conditioner and follow this process twice a week using onion or garlic as per your choice.

Any side effects?

Both are generally safe to use on the scalp but if you have a sensitive scalp then you might experience skin irritation. Also, the pungent smell of garlic and onion might linger on your scalp for some time after washing, therefore one surely needs to get used to it. Garlic and onion both are harsh treatments with strong odour and effects, therefore if it does not suit your hair type then it would lead to dry and brittle hair, which are initial signs to stop using the oil treatment.

Which is better for hair?

Both hair oils offer similar benefits for hair growth because of their high sulphur content, but garlic contains selenium and zinc which are very important for hair quality and prevent the occurrence of hair loss. Garlic is also rich in antimicrobial properties compared to onions, therefore to get thick, long, and lustrous locks, hold your breath for some time and start applying garlic oil twice a week for better results.
