Oil, moisturiser or cream: Which is the best way to avoid dry skin this winter?

Oil, moisturiser or cream: What’s the best way to beat dry skin this winter?

Winter in India is magical - the cozy sweaters, the chai on a rainy afternoon, and the crisp morning air. But for your skin, it can feel more like a silent battle. The drop in humidity, heaters in offices, and long, hot showers can leave your skin dry, flaky, and sometimes downright itchy. So, what’s the best way to protect your skin this season? Should you reach for oils, moisturisers, or creams? Let’s break it down in a way that’s perfect for our Indian winters.

2/8

Why winter makes your skin thirsty

Before we talk solutions, let’s understand the problem. Dry winter air strips your skin of its natural moisture. Add the scorching heaters in offices and hot water baths at home, and your skin loses its protective oils even faster. Even people with oily skin can experience dryness because cold weather messes with the skin’s natural barrier.

So, the question isn’t just about hydrating, it’s about locking that hydration in. That’s where oils, creams, and moisturisers come into the picture.

3/8

Oils

Oils have been a part of Indian skincare for centuries. Think coconut oil, almond oil, sesame oil, or argan oil, these are not just traditional remedies, they’re scientifically beneficial too. Oils work by forming a protective layer on your skin, preventing moisture from escaping. They are excellent for extremely dry areas like elbows, knees, and heels.

Coconut oil, for example, is a go-to for many because it’s readily available, lightweight, and has antibacterial properties. Almond oil is rich in Vitamin E, helping repair and nourish the skin. Sesame oil, with its deep penetration, is perfect for a warm winter massage that doubles as relaxation therapy.

The only catch? Oils don’t actually add water to your skin - they lock in what’s already there. So if your skin is dehydrated, oil alone might not be enough.

Moisturisers

Moisturisers are a staple for daily skin care. They usually have a mix of water and lipids (fats), which help hydrate the skin while also forming a barrier to prevent moisture loss. Lightweight lotions are great for office use or when you don’t want your skin to feel greasy.

In India, where winters can still feel humid in cities like Mumbai but dry in Delhi or Rajasthan, moisturisers are the perfect middle ground. They provide hydration without being heavy, and you can layer them under makeup without any pilling or patchiness. Look for moisturisers with glycerine, hyaluronic acid, or aloe vera - they draw water into your skin and keep it plump.

Creams: The heavyweights

Creams are thicker, richer, and usually contain more oils than a regular moisturiser. They’re perfect for overnight use or for those suffering from severely dry skin. In northern India, where temperatures can drop drastically, creams provide a shield against windburn and help repair the skin barrier.

Ayurvedic creams with ingredients like turmeric, saffron, and licorice are a bonus, they not only moisturise but also soothe irritated skin. The only downside? Creams can feel heavy and sticky if applied during the day or in humid conditions, so pick your timing wisely.

6/8

The art of layering

Here’s the trick many dermatologists in India swear by: layering. For extremely dry skin, start with a hydrating serum or aloe vera gel, then apply a moisturiser, and finally seal it all with a thin layer of oil. This method gives your skin hydration, protection, and nourishment all at once.

You don’t always need all three, assess your skin type and the weather. If your skin is only mildly dry, a moisturiser is enough. If it’s dehydrated and itchy, add oil or a cream.

7/8

Extra tips for winter skin care in India

Hot showers, but Not Too Hot: Long, hot showers strip oils from your skin. Lukewarm water is kinder.

Exfoliate gently: Use a mild scrub once or twice a week to remove dead skin, but don’t overdo it.

Hydrate inside out: Drink plenty of water and include hydrating foods like cucumber, oranges, and coconut water.

Protect your hands and feet: Use gloves and socks with thicker creams or oils before bed.

Sunscreen isn’t just for summer: UVA rays still exist in winter, so a lightweight sunscreen is important.

8/8

So, what’s the verdict?

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. Oils, creams, and moisturisers all have their roles. If your skin is generally normal and the winter isn’t harsh, a moisturiser may be enough. For very dry, flaky skin, creams and oils are lifesavers. And if you’re looking for the ultimate winter-proof routine, layering them strategically can make your skin look and feel nourished all season long.

Winter is meant to be enjoyed, not endured. With the right hydration strategy, your skin can stay soft, supple, and radiant—no matter how cold or dry it gets outside.
