The passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in 2019 triggered widespread outrage as local organisations saw it as an instrument to allow more illegal immigrants to the sensitive border region. The Centre's recent remarks could lead to fresh protests

Union minister Shantanu Thakur’s recent remark that the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 or CAA will be rolled out across India within a week has stirred the hornet’s nest with two chief ministers vowing to oppose its implementation in their respective states.

West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, a staunch critic of the law, said that she would not allow anyone to take away the citizenship of people during her lifetime.
