​Tragedy in Pune: Old bridge collapses into Indrayani river; 4 dead, many missing - pics

Authorities revealed the bridge was old and dilapidated, raising concerns about its safety. Despite no rainfall at the time of the collapse, days of heavy rain had swollen the river. The structure gave way under the weight of over 100 people, highlighting the need for urgent inspections of such infrastructure.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as people fell into the river. Locals immediately jumped in to help, pulling some victims out before officials arrived. Videos of the crumbled structure and swirling river below circulated widely, raising public concern and prompting questions about oversight.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently abroad, spoke with CM Fadnavis and was briefed on rescue operations. He expressed concern over the incident and assured full central assistance. The Centre is monitoring the situation closely as rescue operations continue late into the evening.

The NDRF deployed two teams, while the CRPF rushed one company to the site without waiting for orders. The fire department, police, and local civilians also joined hands in the rescue. Rescue teams are using boats, diving gear, and specialised tools to search submerged areas and manage the crowd.

Chief Minister Fadnavis announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for the families of those who died. The government will also cover the entire cost of treatment for the injured. In his public message, he expressed grief and promised swift relief measures.

The incident has triggered scrutiny of infrastructure maintenance in tourist-heavy areas. Authorities are likely to inspect similar bridges and issue new safety protocols. The administration has urged people to stay away from the site and avoid speculation as formal investigations into the cause are underway.
