Bridge collapses during tourist rush

An old iron bridge over the Indrayani River collapsed around 4 PM in Pune's Maval tehsil, while around 125 tourists were reportedly on it. The incident occurred near Kundamala, a popular weekend destination. Heavy rainfall in the preceding days had raised river levels, which may have worsened the consequences of the collapse. Rising death toll and missing persons

Officials initially confirmed two deaths, which later rose to four, with several people still missing and feared swept away by the strong currents. Around 20-25 individuals were reportedly thrown into the river. Search teams are working downstream to locate the missing amid difficult water conditions. (ANI photo)

Bridge in poor condition

Authorities revealed the bridge was old and dilapidated, raising concerns about its safety. Despite no rainfall at the time of the collapse, days of heavy rain had swollen the river. The structure gave way under the weight of over 100 people, highlighting the need for urgent inspections of such infrastructure.
