JABALPUR: It was a hot catch. A teenaged girl fighting on the frontline of the Naxalite campaign. But soon, police found the tribal girl was deaf and mute. So what did they do? Well, a constable raped her and then, the police left her in a Nari Niketan and forgot all about her.
That was 13 years ago. This week, Madhya Pradesh police finally admitted they were wrong about the mute girl, who's called "Pappe" by other niketan inmates.
So, finally she's free, but has nowhere to go. In 1992, the Seoni police picked up Pappe on suspicion that she was a Naxalite.
They later dumped her at the Nari Niketan in Jabalpur. In March 1994, while Pappe was being brought back to the Nari Niketan after an appearance in the Seoni trial court, she was raped by an inebriated head constable.
It was only after her uneasy behaviour aroused suspicion that her caretakers at the Nari Niketan called in an interpreter who disclosed that she was raped. Though the accused was charged and the policemen who were supposed to be accompanying her, suspended, the administration is treating the entire issue lightly.
District collector Sanjay Dubey said he was not aware of the rape and there seems to be no concern for the girl who has spent the prime of her youth with the stigma of being a Naxalite because the police picked her up in a case of mistaken identity.
