Manipur mobs target armoury; 1 dead, 2 hurt as forces open fire

IMPHAL: Deadly violence erupted Tuesday night in Manipur, resulting in the death of a 24-year-old man and injuries to two others in paramilitary firing as mobs targeted the police training college and armoury of 5th India Reserve Battalion in Imphal East district, reports K Sarojkumar Sharma.

The attacks unfolded against the backdrop of intensified search operations to recover over 5,000 arms and ammunition looted from police armouries since ethnic violence erupted in Manipur on May 3 last year. Simultaneously, another group attempted to storm the police training complex at Pangei, located nearby. In response, paramilitary forces opened fire, wounding Okram Santosh (24), Kh Robert, and Tongbram Rex. Santosh died en route to hospital, while other two are undergoing treatment.
