Shivakumar will rule for long time, says his astrologer

A prominent astrologer closely associated with Karnataka Congress president D K Shivakumar has predicted that the senior leader will hold the state’s top post for an extended period. The remarks come amid strong speculation that Shivakumar will soon be chosen as leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Karnataka.

Astrologer Dwarakanath Guruji said he had suggested three possible dates for Shivakumar, the Kanakapura MLA, to assume office as chief minister — 31 May, 5 June and 6 June. He also predicted that Shivakumar would return to power after the 2028 Assembly elections.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leaders continued discussions over government formation after Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot accepted Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s resignation and dissolved the Cabinet. Guruji maintained that Shivakumar’s “strong horoscope” and support from the Congress high command would ensure a lengthy tenure in office.

'Change is always good': Congress leader Veerappa Moily on Karnataka cabinet reshuffle

Congress leader M Veerappa Moily on Friday backed changes in the Karnataka Cabinet, saying a reshuffle would help the party tackle anti-incumbency and bring opportunities for aspiring legislators. Speaking to ANI, Moily said introducing “new faces” into the ministry would strengthen the government and improve public perception. He added that even if outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had continued in office, cabinet changes would still have been necessary.

Moily said retaining the same ministers for too long could create anti-incumbency concerns, while a refreshed cabinet would improve governance and maintain public support. He also underlined the need for experienced leaders to represent Karnataka in the Rajya Sabha, saying the Congress required capable voices at the national level as it was not in power in Delhi.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot accepted Siddaramaiah’s resignation on Friday, a day after he stepped down following directions from the Congress high command. Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar later met Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge in Delhi to discuss the cabinet reshuffle and government formation.

Protests erupt across Karnataka after Siddaramaiah resigns as CM

Supporters of Congress leader Siddaramaiah staged widespread protests across Karnataka on Thursday after his decision to resign as Chief Minister, triggering emotional scenes and political tension.

Outside his official residence, Kaveri, in Bengaluru, large crowds gathered, surrounding him and urging him not to step down. Siddaramaiah was seen attempting to calm supporters as emotions escalated, with some even trying to block his vehicle as he left to submit his resignation.

Protests spread to cities including Shivamogga, Yadgir, Kalaburagi and Hubballi, where demonstrators—many from the Kuruba and AHINDA communities—burnt tyres, raised slogans and demanded that his resignation be rejected. In Yadgir, police struggled to disperse crowds as protesters formed human chains and blocked roads. One supporter, identified as Bheemu, allegedly attempted self-harm in distress, but was stopped by others.

At multiple locations, demonstrators carried posters of Congress leaders and accused the party high command of treating Siddaramaiah unfairly. In Hubballi, slogans were also raised against senior leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and DK Shivakumar.

Despite the unrest, Siddaramaiah confirmed he had resigned two days after being directed by the Congress leadership, thanking party leaders for giving him the opportunity to serve a second term.

From 'Janata Parivar' loyalist to Congress stalwart, Karnataka's longest-serving CM — Siddaramaiah's journey

Siddaramaiah’s political journey represents one of the most striking transformations in Karnataka politics. Once firmly rooted in the ‘Janata Parivar’ and known for his strong anti-Congress position, he eventually made a decisive shift, joining the Congress in 2006 and rising to become one of its most influential leaders in Karnataka.

Born in 1948 in Siddaramanahundi in Mysuru district, he came from a modest farming background, studied at Mysore University, and briefly practised law before entering politics. Influenced by socialist ideals of Ram Manohar Lohia, he began his career as a taluk board member and was first elected to the Assembly in 1983 from Chamundeshwari.

Over time, he emerged as a prominent backward classes leader through the AHINDA movement and steadily built his political base. After serving as Deputy Chief Minister in the early coalition era, he became Chief Minister in 2013 and again in 2023, eventually becoming the longest-serving CM in the state’s history.

Despite internal party dynamics and a long power tussle with DK Shivakumar, he completed a landmark tenure shaped by welfare schemes, though also shadowed by controversy, before stepping down as part of a leadership transition.

“We never shied away from fulfilling our promises. That has satisfied both me and my party,” he said, while also referring to allegations levelled against him by the Opposition, including criticism from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Karnataka CM News: 'Always believed that the entire society should live like a family, with social and economic equality,' says Siddaramaiah

Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah resigned from his post on Thursday, paving the way for deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar to take over after months of speculation over a leadership change in the Congress government.

In his remarks, Siddaramaiah thanked Congress workers, legislators and MPs for their support since 2006. He said his cabinet colleagues had extended “full cooperation and affection” during both his tenures as Chief Minister, from 2013 to 2018 and again from 2023 onwards. Reflecting on his political journey, he said he came from a rural background and never imagined becoming an MLA, Leader of the Opposition or Chief Minister. He added that nobody in his family had been involved in politics and described his rise as unexpected.

Siddaramaiah also said he had always been guided by the teachings of Buddha, Basavanna, B R Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi.

"Always believed that the entire society should live like a family, with social and economic equality," he said.

I thank Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge: Siddaramaiah

Siddaramaiah said it was now the Governor’s responsibility to invite the next Chief Minister to form the government. He pointed out that the Congress has the support of 136 MLAs, along with backing from two Independent legislators, giving the party a clear majority in the Assembly.

Referring to the transition, he said it would be constitutionally appropriate for the next Chief Minister to take charge. Drawing a comparison with Kannada icon Rajkumar, who was often referred to as the “people’s god”, Siddaramaiah said that, as a politician, he regarded the Constitution as his religion and the voters as his gods.

He also expressed gratitude to the Congress leadership for the opportunities he had received during his political career. “I have had the privilege of serving twice as Chief Minister and twice as Leader of the Opposition. For this opportunity, I thank Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge,” he said.

After months of political uncertainty and intense behind-the-scenes negotiations within the Congress, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah resigned on Thursday, signalling a major leadership transition in the state and paving the way for his deputy, DK Shivakumar, to assume the top post.

Prabhu Shankar, special secretary to the governor, confirmed receipt of the resignation, though formal acceptance is pending as Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot is currently in Madhya Pradesh.

The resignation came shortly after Siddaramaiah reportedly informed cabinet colleagues during a breakfast meeting at his residence. The Karnataka Congress later shared photographs highlighting the cordial relationship between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, captioned: “Unity is our strength!” In several images, Shivakumar was seen seeking Siddaramaiah’s blessings.

The leadership transition gained momentum after Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Surjewala in the national capital. Sources said Rahul Gandhi urged Siddaramaiah to step aside and consider taking up a larger national role within the Congress.

The Congress leadership is simultaneously trying to avoid a “Rajasthan-like crisis” by managing the transition carefully and preventing factional unrest. While Shivakumar’s supporters are demanding that the reported power-sharing agreement be honoured, Siddaramaiah loyalists continue to highlight his support among MLAs and his political significance as a prominent OBC leader. The Congress has reportedly offered Siddaramaiah a Rajya Sabha berth and a national role to ensure a smoother transition.

The unfolding leadership change has also intensified attacks from the BJP, with opposition leaders accusing the Congress government of administrative paralysis due to the prolonged “chair fight” between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. The coming days are expected to determine whether the Congress can manage the transition peacefully or whether internal tensions will escalate further.
