IMD warns of heavy rainfall off Southern Indian Peninsula

Indian Meteorological Department has warned that under the influence of a deep depression over South-East Arabian Sea, rainfall at most places with heavy rainfall at a few places and isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Tamilnadu (TN), Puducherry, Kerala and Lakshadweep Islands during next 24 hours.

MANGALORE: Indian Meteorological Department has warned that under the influence of a deep depression over South-East Arabian Sea, rainfall at most places with heavy rainfall at a few places and isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Tamilnadu (TN), Puducherry, Kerala and Lakshadweep Islands during next 24 hours. Squally winds speed reaching 45-55 kmph is likely to prevail along and off south TN, Puducherry, Kerala and South Karnataka coasts.

The depression has formed over Comorin area and neighbourhood and lay centred at 8.30 am on Saturday about 120-km south-southwest of Thiruvananthapuram, 400-km east-southeast of Minicoy,, 400-km west-northwest of Colombo and 500-km north-northeast of Male. The system is likely to move west-north-westwards across Lakshadweep area and intensify into a deep depression during the next 24 hours, IMD stated in a press release here on Sunday.
IMD advised fishermen not to venture in to the Sea along and off south Tamilnadu, Puducherry, Kerala, South Karnataka Coasts and Lakshadweep during the next 48-hours. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs also directed the state governments concerned to keep a close watch, monitor the situation in their areas regularly and take appropriate precautionary measures. The city under the influence of the system received scattered rainfall.
