Election Results 2026 Live Updates: 'Ball is in Vijay's court,' says AIADMK leader Kovai Sathyan

Election Results 2026 Live Updates: Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA secured a massive victory in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry. TVK swept Tamil Nadu and UDF made a massive comeback in Kerala.

Counting of votes are still under way across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry. The Election Commission of India is yet to release official figures.

BJP pushes ahead in Bengal and Assam
Early trends from the Assembly election results indicated major political shifts across eastern and southern India, with the BJP emerging as a dominant force in West Bengal and Assam. In West Bengal, the BJP was leading in 109 seats, well ahead of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), which was ahead in 63 constituencies according to Election Commission trends. The contest remained the centrepiece of Election 2026, marked by fierce campaigning over issues such as electoral rolls, alleged rigging and political polarisation.

Security remained tight across Bengal, with more than 2.5 lakh Central Armed Police Force personnel deployed alongside state police. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari expressed confidence that the party would form the government, while the TMC leadership remained cautious as counting continued. In neighbouring Assam, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led the BJP to a commanding position, with the party ahead in 74 of the state’s 126 seats, while Congress trailed far behind at 23.

Vijay’s TVK stuns Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu delivered one of the biggest surprises of the election, with actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) making a dramatic electoral debut. The party was leading in 103 seats, putting it ahead of both the AIADMK and the ruling DMK. The AIADMK was ahead in 67 seats, while the DMK slipped to third place with 38 seats, pointing to a major political churn in the state’s Dravidian landscape.

Congress gains ground in Kerala, NDA leads in Puducherry
Kerala offered a boost for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), which surged ahead in the counting trends. Congress was leading in 61 seats, while the CPI(M) and CPI were ahead in 29 and nine seats respectively. KPCC president Sunny Joseph described the trends as evidence of a strong pro-UDF wave. In Puducherry, the contest remained fragmented, with Congress and BJP tied at two seats each, while the All India NR Congress was leading in seven constituencies.

This is the BJP's plan, I have been saying this since yesterday that they will be shown ahead first. They have stopped counting at many places. Such machines have been found in Kalyani, where there is no match; atrocities are being committed against TMC from all sides through central forces. Through SIR, they tried to steal votes, and even now, we are ahead by more than 100 seats, which is not being reported. Everything is being reported wrong. The Election Commission is working entirely as per its own will, and central forces are also with them. The police are also working with the central forces. I tell party workers that there is no need to feel disheartened; you will win after sunset. The counting of 2-4 rounds has taken place, the counting goes up to 14-18 rounds, and we will win. There is no need for anyone to be afraid."

Police deployment outside the party office was gradually scaled down as the day progressed, while cadres began dismantling temporary arrangements set up ahead of counting. The thinning crowd and subdued activity marked a sharp contrast to the usual election-day buzz.

Among party workers, reactions varied, with some attributing the setback to the surge in support for actor-turned-politician Vijay and his electoral debut, while others pointed to weak grassroots mobilisation.

Senior Congress leaders, including KC Venugopal, Ramesh Chennithala, Sunny Joseph and Shashi Tharoor, gathered at the party’s Kerala headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram to celebrate after the United Democratic Front crossed the halfway mark in trends released by the Election Commission of India.

The leaders marked the occasion by cutting a cake and jointly raising their hands in celebration of the UDF’s strong performance in early trends.

"These are just early trends. Even though UDF has an edge right now, we hope this will be reversed in the ensuing rounds. Because, under LDF, Keralam became the only Indian state from where extreme poverty has been eradicated. It is at the top in terms of quality of education, healthcare, and social security measures. We hope, politically literate people of Keralam would consider all these aspects and support LDF, which will be reflected in the upcoming rounds... we are hopeful for a third term," said MA Baby.

According to the latest ECI trends, the UDF is leading in 91 constituencies out of 140 in Kerala. The Congress is ahead in 58 seats, followed by the Indian Union Muslim League in 22.

Election Results 2026: Kerala BJP chief says voters will defeat 'divisive and corrupt politics'
Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Monday said the party will wait for the election results before making any formal comments, while expressing confidence that voters will reject what he called “divisive and corrupt politics” of the opposition.

Speaking to ANI, Chandrasekhar said no party can predetermine the outcome in a democracy, while also taking a swipe at the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Congress, calling their stance “arrogance”.

"We will wait for the election results. The results will come out by midday today, and we will then comment at that point. We are in a democracy. No political party can decide the fate of another political party," he said.

Targeting the opposition further, he added, "This is typical arrogance of the CPM and the Congress, where they think somehow that they will decide what the people will do. That is not at all correct. This is a democracy. This is not China or Russia."

Expressing confidence in the electorate, he said voters in Kerala would reject corruption and divisive politics.

"I am very confident that the divisive politics of the INDI alliance will be defeated. The corruption of the INDI alliance parties will be defeated, and people will choose to put their state on a track of corruption-free governance," he added.

Meanwhile, in Kerala, early trends show the United Democratic Front leading in 52 seats, with the Congress ahead in 49 seats. The Left Democratic Front is leading in 21 seats, while the CPI(M) is ahead in 41 constituencies.
