In the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, Subhashis Om of the Bharatiya Janata Party registered a comfortable victory in Debra (Assembly Constituency 229), defeating TMC candidate Rajib Banerjee by a margin of 28,801 votes.
Om secured 1,14,463 votes after all 18 rounds of counting, while Banerjee polled 85,662 votes.
Debra in Paschim Medinipur district is currently represented by Humayun Kabir of the All India
Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. In the 2021 election, he polled 95,850 votes and defeated the BJP’s Bharati Ghosh, who secured 84,624 votes, giving him a winning margin of 11,226.
Key issues are predominantly rural: improvement of irrigation for paddy and potato cultivation, price realisation for small and marginal farmers, and better rural roads connecting villages to Debra bazar and Kharagpur–Ghatal corridors.
Flooding of low‑lying areas during heavy rain, demand for more government health facilities, and upgradation of schools and colleges are recurring local concerns.
Debra is a general (non‑reserved) seat under the Ghatal Lok Sabha constituency, represented by actor‑MP Deepak Adhikari (Dev) of TMC, who retained the parliamentary seat in 2024 with a large margin, reinforcing Trinamool’s dominance from Assembly to Parliament here.
Historically a CPI(M) stronghold through leaders like Sk Jahangir Karim, the seat flipped to TMC in 2011 and has stayed with the party for three straight terms, marking a durable realignment in this agrarian belt.
