SRINAGAR: Two Army soldiers grab a 17-year-old Kashmiri girl. While one tries to rape her, the other one helps him. Although the girl was saved by some villagers, the two accused who were caught in the act have been let off lightly by the Army. A general court martial exonerates one soldier and lets the other off lightly — with a year's imprisonment and a demotion.
Naik Balwant Singh and Sepoy Joginder Singh, who was let off the rape hook, were deployed in Bandipora on June 26 when they tried to rape the teenager. Villagers stripped them and handed them over to cops. Locals had alleged that soldiers, posing as militants had demanded shelter for the night from the family and tried to rape the girl. "It is ridiculous that two soldiers who tried to rape my daughter after forcibly entering my house were let off with practically no punishment," said Mohammad Rafiq Khan, the victim's father. He would now approach a civil court for justice.
