Summer care tips for kidneys

“The kidneys need special attention as the temperature rises, particularly for people who already have kidney disease. Maintaining proper hydration is one of the most important guidelines. Sweating is typically more intense in the summer. Maintaining enough hydration will help the kidneys remove various poisons from the body. Keeping an eye on the urine's color is one easy test. A person is well-hydrated if the color is light; if not, they need extra fluids,” says Dr. Anupam Roy, Additional Director - Nephrology and Kidney Transplant, Aakash Healthcare Multi-Speciality Hospital, Dwarka told TOI Health and shares summer care tips for kidney patients.

2/6

Add foods that are hydrating to your diet

One can always include hydrating meals in their daily diet in addition to drinking water. Juices from various fruits and vegetables are in season during the summer. The finest summertime foods for hydration are cucumber and watermelon juices. They are full of vital nutrients in addition to hydrating the body.

3/6

Watch how much salt you eat

For the kidneys, cutting back on salt intake is crucial. One of the main causes of blood pressure, which can lead to kidney stones, is salt. Limiting salt intake from fast food and other everyday meals is always a good idea.

4/6

Prevent dehydration when exercising

In the summer, timing is crucial, but physical activity is still essential. Dehydration can result from excessive perspiration in direct sunshine. To protect the body and kidneys from heat, it is advised to plan the exercise for the early morning or late evening.

5/6

Take care when using painkillers

Ibuprofen and Naproxen are popular painkillers, but frequent use of these can seriously damage the kidneys. When dehydrated, these medications might lead to major issues. In these situations, it is advised to speak with a physician before ingesting them.

6/6

Pay attention to bodily signs and urine

The body naturally issues early alerts for possible issues. A person's kidneys are not working properly if they notice that their urine is black in color or that their pee production is decreased. The kidneys can avoid any issues by being aware of these symptoms.
Maintaining the health and functionality of the kidneys during the summer can be greatly aided by adhering to these little recommendations.
