Who is Vivek Ramaswamy?

Vivek Ramaswamy is a notable figure in the United States known for his roles as an entrepreneur, billionaire, and involvement in medical sciences. Co-founder of Roivant Sciences, a pharmaceutical company, Ramaswamy made headlines when he declared his candidacy for the Republican Party nomination in the 2024 United States presidential election. However, he suspended his campaign in January 2024 after finishing fourth in the Iowa caucuses.

Early life and education

Ramaswamy was born to Indian Hindu immigrant parents in Cincinnati. His father, an engineer at General Electric, and his mother, Geetha Ramaswamy, a geriatric psychiatrist, provided a supportive environment for his education. Ramaswamy attended public schools and graduated as valedictorian from Cincinnati's St. Xavier High School in 2003. In 2007, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Harvard University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Later, in 2013, he attended Yale Law School, graduating with a Juris Doctor.

Career beginnings and Roivant Sciences

Engaging in libertarian politics, Ramaswamy became the president of the Harvard Political Union. In 2007, he co-founded Campus Venture Network, which he later sold to the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. From 2007 to 2014, Ramaswamy worked at the hedge fund QVT Financial, managing the firm's biotech portfolio. With a vision to bring patented drugs to the market, he co-founded Roivant Sciences in 2014, gaining recognition for acquiring patents from major pharmaceutical companies and establishing subsidiaries such as Dermavant and Urovant. Despite initial success, Roivant faced challenges, notably with the failure of intepirdine in a large clinical trial.

Later ventures and activism

In 2022, Ramaswamy co-founded Strive Asset Management, focusing on "anti-woke" investments. Engaging in activism against environmental, social, and corporate governance initiatives, Roivant Sciences established Roivant Social Ventures in 2020, supporting pro-diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Presidential campaign (2023–2024)

Ramaswamy declared his candidacy for the Republican nomination in February 2023. But campaign ended in January 2024 after Ramaswamy finished fourth in Iowa's caucuses. Endorsing Donald Trump, he held specific political positions, including opposition to affirmative action and abortion, along with support for executive power reforms.
