4 lizard colours you’ve probably never seen

Most of us think of lizards as creatures that quietly blend into the background– in shades of green, brown, or grey that help them stay unnoticed. But in certain corners of the world, lizards break away from this familiar image. Some of them carry colours so rare that they instantly catch the eye: brilliant blues, unusual purples, soft pinks, and even bold reds. These shades may not be common, but they show us just how diverse and surprising reptiles can be.

Blue

Blue is one of the rarest colours you’ll find in reptiles. Some iguanas have this bright shade, which makes them instantly stand out in their surroundings. Unlike most colours that come from pigments, blue usually shows up because of the way light bounces off tiny structures in their skin. That’s what makes it such a rare and special sight. Seeing a blue reptile feels almost unreal, like nature is giving you a glimpse of one of its hidden secrets.

3/5

Purple

Purple is even rarer in reptiles than blue. Some rock-dwelling agamas in Africa have patches of purple mixed with blue on their bodies, making them look striking and unique. Males usually show these colours more strongly, especially during mating season. Their bright shades have caught the attention of both scientists and local communities. Spotting a reptile with purple feels like finding a living jewel in the wild.

4/5

Pink

Pink is quite rare in reptiles, but a few gecko species show this soft shade. Their light pink tones, often with small patterns, give them a gentler look than most lizards. The colour also helps them hide on stone walls and rocky surfaces, working as natural camouflage. Because it’s so unusual, spotting a pink reptile instantly stands out.

5/5

Red

Red appears a little more often in reptiles than pink or purple, but it’s still rare compared to their usual earthy tones. Some large lizards, like tegus, carry deep red shades across their bodies. On their scaly skin, the colour looks textured and bold, unlike the smooth red often seen in amphibians. This makes it stand out even more. In the wild, a red reptile is almost impossible to overlook– it’s a shade that instantly grabs attention.
