The three oldest high courts in India

The High Courts play a crucial role in managing legal practices in India, whether it's resolving cases of national importance or adjudicating minor infractions like traffic violations. India's legal system boasts a rich history, with high courts serving as pivotal institutions in dispensing justice across various regions. Here's everything you need to know about the three oldest high courts in India established during the 19th century. (Image: Wikipedia)

Bombay High Court

Established on August 14, 1862, the Bombay High Court ranks as the second oldest high court in India. Initially presiding over the presidency town of Bombay (now Mumbai), its jurisdiction expanded to include territories such as Maharashtra, Goa, and the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, as well as Daman and Diu. Given its diverse jurisdiction, the Bombay High Court has witnessed numerous reorganizations over time. Reflecting the colonial era, Mumbai's architecture is renowned for its impressive Gothic-style windows and arched gates. The Bombay High Court has delivered several landmark judgments, particularly in constitutional, criminal, and corporate law. (Image: Canva)

Calcutta High Court

The Calcutta High Court stands as one of India's oldest High Courts, established on July 1, 1862. Initially, it held jurisdiction over the cities of Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras. Over time, the court's jurisdiction has undergone several modifications. Influenced by British architecture, the Calcutta High Court's building embodies a blend of colonial design with a distinctly Indian essence. Notably, its main building is an architectural marvel, reminiscent of a church with its towers, clocks, and arched windows. Over the years, the Calcutta High Court has rendered many landmark decisions that have profoundly influenced Indian legal philosophy. (Image: Canva)
