Remarkable animals that live and hunt without eyes

Most animals use their eyes to see. Eyes help them find food, avoid danger, and move around.

But some animals live in places where there is no light. These include underground water, caves, and deep rivers. In such places, eyes are not useful. Over time, these animals stopped needing them.

Instead, they depend on other senses. Some feel movement in the water. Some use smell. Others sense vibrations around them. Even without eyes, they are able to survive and live normally.

Here are five animals that live without eyes and rely on other senses to get through life.

Texas Blind Salamander

The Texas blind salamander is one such animal.

It lives underground in dark water caves. There is no light in these spaces. Because of this, its eyes are very small and covered by skin. The salamander cannot see.

Its body is pale white or light pink. It never comes into sunlight. Red gills near its head help it breathe underwater. It has short legs and a long tail, which help it move through water. The animal usually grows between 3 and 5 inches long.

Star-Nosed Mole

The star-nosed mole is almost blind because its eyes are very small. Its nose has 11 pairs of pink tentacles shaped like a star. These tentacles have thousands of tiny sensors that help the mole feel its surroundings and find food. It can even smell underwater, which is very rare for mammals. Its sense of touch is one of the best among all mammals.

Freshwater Hydra

Hydras are small freshwater animals. They do not have eyes, a brain, or real muscles. Their body has a head, a foot, and tentacles that catch food. They use a network of nerve cells called nerve nets to feel the world around them. Hydras also have stem cells that keep renewing, which helps them stay young.

Widemouth Blindcat

The widemouth blindcat is a small catfish found only in Texas. It has no eyes and is white or pink. Its thick lips and wide, flat head help it move and feed in dark water. Its gills are covered by membranes, and its flat nose helps it sense changes in water. It grows about 5 inches long.

Kaua’i Cave Wolf Spider

The Kaua’i cave wolf spider has no eyes. It lives in lava tubes and hunts using vibrations and chemical signals. Even though it is very small, only about half to three-quarters of an inch, it can still find and catch prey in total darkness.
