Man allegedly places armpit hair on his own plate at restaurant, refuses to pay for expensive meal
A restaurant bill dispute in Sydney has suddenly become the centre of online debate after a CCTV video surfaced from inside a popular dining spot. The clip, shared by the restaurant, allegedly shows a man placing hair onto his own plate before raising a complaint and refusing to pay. The visuals have left many shocked and have sparked strong reactions across social media.
This is what has been reported so far.
The incident reportedly took place on February 11 at Pony Dining, located in the The Rocks area of Sydney. As per news(dot)com(dot)au, a family of six visited the restaurant and ordered several premium dishes. One of the key items on their table was a tomahawk steak priced at up to $140, which is around Rs 12,300.
After eating most of the meal, the family complained that they had found a hair in their food. They then declined to pay the full bill.
Later, when staff checked the CCTV footage, they reportedly saw the man in a white polo shirt glance around before reaching into his armpit and appearing to pull out strands of hair. The footage allegedly shows him placing those strands onto his plate. At the same table, his daughter was seen licking a bowl, while his wife was scrolling through her phone.
According to the restaurant, the group’s behaviour seemed unusual, which led staff to review the CCTV footage after the payment dispute.
Speaking to news(dot)com(dot)au, the establishment said, “Everything was very clean; they had a beautiful table. We decided to check the CCTV after we noticed they were acting very weird. They ordered a lot of food, including a tomahawk.”
After reviewing the footage, the restaurant decided to post the clip on its official Instagram page. The management said the purpose was to raise awareness within the hospitality industry.
“We don’t usually share content like this. This footage shows an incident that occurred in our venue. After the meal was served, the guest later raised a complaint regarding a hair in their meal and declined payment for all the food. During the interaction, our team also experienced inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour," the restaurant captioned the CCTV footage on their Instagram account.
The restaurant also stated that the matter had been formally reported.
Once the video started circulating, many users expressed anger over the alleged act.
One restaurant manager from a nearby venue claimed they had faced a similar experience involving the same group. They said, “I’m a restaurant manager just next to you guys, and they did the same thing to me. They ‘found a small rock’ in their food and created a huge scene, then left without paying the full bill."
Another user wrote, “I am disgusted this happened. It’s unfair and unacceptable…"
An individual commented, “Great, his daughter licked the bowl clean. I hope this family is barred from all establishments."
“The child was licking the plate while the father was pulling out his armpit hair and placing it on the food. His wife sat next to him, seemingly unbothered, continuing to drink her wine. Then they complained that they were disgusted by finding hair in their food. Seriously? What a joke! After verbally abusing the staff, they still left without paying for all the food. Completely unacceptable and shameful behaviour. No server or business deserves to be treated like that," wrote another.
Another account said, “Probably the grossest thing I have seen in a long time. This man should be identified and trolled. Hard. Restaurants have a hard enough time surviving when the economy is good. Cheating the restaurant in this manner is really no different from stealing from them. He deserves punishment."
