Cyclone Montha: Meaning, origin, and how this name was chosen

Cyclone Montha might sound gentle and even poetic — and there’s a reason for that

Montha name was given by Thailand, one of the 13 countries that contribute cyclone names for the North Indian Ocean region. In Thai, “Montha” means “a fragrant flower” or “beautiful flower.” Pretty ironic for something that can bring heavy winds and pounding rain, right? But the idea behind naming cyclones isn’t about their personality — it’s about making them easier to identify and talk about during weather alerts and rescue operations.

How do cyclones get their names?

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), which acts as the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre for this region, manages the naming process. There’s a pre-approved list of names provided by countries like India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Iran, and Thailand, among others. When a storm in the Bay of Bengal or Arabian Sea gets strong enough — with wind speeds around 62 km/h (34 knots) — the IMD gives it the next name on the list. This system helps avoid confusion when multiple storms are active and ensures communication is quick, clear, and consistent.

3/4

How Cyclone Montha formed

Cyclone Montha began brewing over the southeast Bay of Bengal in late October 2025. It started as a low-pressure system but quickly gained strength thanks to warm sea temperatures and favorable wind patterns. As it intensified, the IMD forecasted that Montha would become a Severe Cyclonic Storm, moving toward the Andhra Pradesh coast around October 28. Meteorologists warned of heavy rain, strong winds, coastal flooding, and rough sea conditions, urging people in low-lying areas to stay alert and follow official updates.

A beautiful name, a serious reminder

So while “Montha” translates to a beautiful flower, the storm itself is a powerful reminder of how unpredictable nature can be. The naming system isn’t just about labels — it’s about helping communities prepare, respond, and stay informed. Cyclone Montha’s story shows how science, communication, and regional cooperation come together to protect lives. And even though the name sounds peaceful, it’s a good cue for all of us to take weather warnings seriously and stay safe when nature shows its force.
