7 unique creatures that glow naturally in the dark and why

Some creatures in nature don’t just hide in their surroundings– they actually glow. This glow, called bioluminescence, is a natural ability some animals have to produce their own light. It’s found in many living beings, especially in the ocean, but also on land and in the air. These glowing animals use their light for different reasons, like staying safe, finding food, or talking to each other. Here’s a look at seven amazing creatures that naturally glow, each in its own special way.

2/8

Fireflies

Often spotted glowing in gardens and open fields in the evenings, fireflies light up mainly to find a mate. Their yellow-green glow comes from a chemical reaction in their lower belly. Each firefly species has its own flash pattern, like a secret signal in the dark.

3/8

Bioluminescent bacteria

These tiny bacteria might seem small and simple by themselves, but together they can create amazing visual effects. They live in seawater, wet places, and even on some animals. These glowing bacteria give off a steady blue light, and sometimes they make the ocean sparkle at night.

4/8

Lantern shark

The lantern shark doesn’t shine as brightly as some other sea creatures. It lives deep in the ocean and has glowing spots on its belly. These lights help it hide from predators by matching the faint light coming from above. It’s a quiet but smart way to use light that helps the shark survive in the dark ocean.

5/8

Anglerfish

People hardly ever see anglerfish because they live deep in the ocean, where it’s very dark. What makes them special is the glowing “fishing rod” that sticks out from their head. They use this little light to attract food in the pitch-black water far below the surface.

6/8

Jellyfish

Some jellyfish look just as stunning in the dark as they do in daylight. Take the crystal jelly, for example– it has a clear body that gives off a soft greenish-blue light. This glow can help scare off predators or draw in prey. Found in oceans across the globe, jellyfish like these are some of the most well-known glowing sea creatures.

7/8

Glowworms

Despite the name, glowworms aren't worms at all. They are actually larvae of various insect species that emit light to lure prey. In places like New Zealand and Australia, they’re famous for transforming dark caves into glowing lands, thanks to the soft greenish-blue lights they produce.

8/8

Firefly squid

The firefly squid lives in the waters around Japan and is famous for its bright blue light. It has many tiny glowing spots all over its body that it uses to communicate with other squids and hide from predators.
