7 of the most unique sea creatures in the world

The aquatic ecosystem has always been interesting to humans. It is one territory where we can not survive for long and its inhabitants have always been an enigma. The world under the sea is a whole new one and all the sea creatures are not known to us. Thus, whenever we see news about a new or unique sea creature being discovered, all of us are waiting to see how it looks. These are 7 of the most unique and weird-looking sea creatures known to mankind.Image credits: Canva

Blobfish

In 2013, the blobfish was voted as the World's Ugliest Animal by the Ugly Animal Preservation Society. These deep-water fishes are completely different from the normal school of fishes we know and have different appearances in and out of the sea. Rather than scales, blobfish have loose skin. Thus, within the water, the ocean pressure maintains its shape. However, outside the water blobfish looks like melting ice cream.Image credits: Facebook

Angel Shark

If you saw an angel shark in the sea, you would never think of it as a shark. These flat, ray-like sharks are about 2.4 m long and have large fins on their sides along with two small dorsal fins on its tail. They mostly stay buried in the sand and feast on fish and bottom-dwelling invertebrates.Image credits: Getty Images

Emperor Shrimp

Emperor Shrimp looks the way people experiment with prints in the summers. A fusion of some beautiful colours and patterns. These shrimps live on a couple of hosts such as sea slugs. While the shrimp provides a dedicated cleaning service in return for the protection by the mollusc's chemical defences.Image credits: Getty Images

Costasiella sea slug

This deep sea slug amounting to the size of only 1cm is one of the rarest herbivores in the aquatic kingdom. Also called 'leaf sheep' and 'Shaun-the-sheep' it feeds on marine algae. However, rather than digesting them entirely, the Costasiella sea slug separates the chloroplasts from the meal and embeds them in its own tissues, making itself a rare photosynthetic animal.

Vampire Squid

Guess the vampire fandom is not left behind even in the sea. Also known as Vampyroteuthis infernalis or the vampire squid from hell, this aquatic creature is not a squid. The only member of its own cephalopod order, it is known for turning itself inside out and covering itself with bioluminescent mucous, when approached by predators.Image credits: X

Harp Sponge

The harp sponges also known as Chondrocladia lyra, live 3km deep in the waters of the Californian Coast and their shape resembles that of a harp. However, this harp does not produce music but rather helps them trap the prey inside. Their slender appendages are covered with velcro-like hooks and barbs that trap the passing prey, which the sponge then envelops in a membrane and digests using specialised cells.Image credits: X

Japanese spider crab

With the largest leg span in all of the arthropods, the Japanese spider crab spans up to 12.5 feet from claw to claw. They live up to 1500 ft deep in the Pacific Ocean near Japan and eat both plant and animal matter. They look just like those animated large spiders you see in some movies, that make sleeping at night just a tad bit difficult.
