7 most destructive earthquakes in history

Earthquakes are among the most powerful and destructive natural events on the planet. With the ability to shake cities, shift coastlines, and claim thousands of lives in mere seconds, these seismic disasters leave behind not just rubble, but decades of recovery and stories of human resilience and sorrows. Some quakes hit the epicenter in the dead of night, giving people no warning, and others are followed by tsunamis that worsen the impact of the disaster across the affected regions and countries.

While many earthquakes happen each year around the world, there are a few that are so catastrophic that they change the course of a nation’s history.
Here are seven of the most devastating earthquakes in recent history

2/8

The Kashmir earthquake (2005)

On October 8, 2005, a magnitude-7.6 earthquake struck Pakistan-administered Kashmir and parts of the North-West Frontier Province. It also shook parts of India and Afghanistan. Over 79,000 people were killed, and more than 32,000 buildings collapsed in Kashmir alone. The quake hit just before winter, leaving hundreds of thousands homeless in freezing conditions. According to disaster response groups, this was one of the deadliest quakes in South Asia in decades and exposed the region’s lack of infrastructure endurance.

3/8

The Sichuan earthquake (2008)

On May 12, 2008, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck China’s Sichuan province, leaving nearly 90,000 people dead and millions homeless. Entire villages and towns were flattened, particularly in Beichuan and near the epicenter in Wenchuan. The destruction was made worse by landslides and the collapse of poorly constructed buildings, including many schools that followed the disaster. More than 3,75,000 people were injured. This disaster led to a national mourning period and massive government-led reconstruction efforts across the region.

4/8

The great Peruvian earthquake (1970)

Also known as the Ancash earthquake, this magnitude 7.9 quake hit off the coast of Peru on May 31, 1970. Around 70,000 people died, and more destruction was caused by landslides. The deadliest occurred on Mount Huascarán, where snow and rock buried the town of Yungay. The Santa River valley suffered huge losses, and entire communities were wiped out in seconds. It remains one of South America’s worst natural disasters in recorded history.

5/8

The Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami (2004)

On December 26, 2004, a magnitude-9.1 undersea earthquake off Indonesia’s coast triggered a devastating tsunami across the Indian Ocean. Waves up to 30 feet high killed over 2,30,000 people in 13 countries, including Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand. Northern Sumatra’s Aceh province was hit the hardest. This disaster led to one of the largest humanitarian relief efforts ever and led to stark improvements in global tsunami warning systems.

6/8

The great Tangshan earthquake (1976)

On July 28, 1976, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit Tangshan, an industrial city in northeastern China. It struck without warning in the early morning, flattening nearly all buildings and killing at least 2,42,000 people, though unofficial estimates put the number as high as 6,55,000. Over 7,00,000 more were injured. The quake devastated the area and even caused damage as far as Beijing. It has been regarded as one of the most dangerous earthquakes of the 20th century.

7/8

The Haiti earthquake (2010)

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit near Port-au-Prince on January 12, 2010, killing an estimated 3,00,000 people and displacing over 1.5 million. Haiti’s weak infrastructure collapsed rapidly, leaving the people trapped and emergency services unable to provide relief to such a large number. Aftershocks added to the destruction. Entire neighborhoods turned to rubble within seconds.

8/8

The Kobe earthquake (1995)

Known as the Great Hanshin Earthquake, this magnitude-6.9 quake hit Kobe, Japan, on January 17, 1995. It killed more than 5,000 people and caused over $100 billion in damage, making it one of the most expensive earthquakes in history. About 2,00,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed. The disaster occurred in one of Japan’s most developed areas. It marked a turning point in Japan’s disaster response systems.
