6 reasons why the king cobra is more than just a deadly snake

6 fascinating facts about the king cobra you probably didn’t know

The king cobra is one of the most recognised snakes in the world. People often associate it with its flared hood, deadly venom, and the fear it creates. But there’s more to this reptile than what most people think.

Those who have seen it up close or followed it in the wild say it behaves very differently from its reputation. It’s alert, calm, and often avoids conflict. Some even describe it as unusually intelligent for a snake.

Here are six lesser-known facts about the king cobra that reveal just how unique it really is.

2/7

It doesn’t hiss. It growls

Yes, really. Most snakes hiss– that sharp sound we’ve all heard in nature documentaries. But the king cobra? It makes a low, growling noise. Not loud, but deep. A rumble that comes from the windpipe. It feels more like something you'd expect from a mammal than a reptile.

3/7

It eats other snakes– often

This snake is a predator that goes after its own kind. Not literally its species, but other snakes. From non-venomous rat snakes to venomous kraits, and sometimes even smaller cobras– they’re all part of its diet. And because it’s naturally resistant to many venoms, it doesn’t hesitate.

4/7

It avoids trouble

Despite how dangerous it is, the king cobra usually stays out of fights. If it spots you first– and chances are it will– it prefers to slip away unnoticed. It only becomes defensive if it feels cornered. Researchers and trackers who've observed it say it’s surprisingly composed for a snake its size.

5/7

It can stand up– almost eye to eye

One of the cobra’s most intimidating behaviours is how it lifts its body off the ground. Nearly a third of it. When standing like that, it can reach chest height or higher. Combine that with its hood flared out and eyes locked on a threat– it’s a moment few forget.

6/7

It’s more agile than people think

This snake doesn’t just slither on the forest floor. It swims with ease, gliding through rivers and swampy patches. It climbs too. Trees, branches, anything that gets it closer to food or a safe place. That flexibility gives it an edge.

7/7

It doesn’t need to eat often

When it finally gets a good meal– say, a full-grown snake– the king cobra can go weeks, sometimes longer, without eating again. Its metabolism is slow, and that works in its favour, especially in places where food isn’t always easy to find.
