6 of the largest insects in the world

Insects are usually small and easy to miss. But some are much bigger than you’d expect. These flying insects don’t scare with their speed or strength– they stand out just because of how large they are.

They live in all kinds of places, from thick forests to faraway islands. With huge wings and unusual looks, they are some of the biggest insects ever found. Here’s a look at six flying insects that prove size really can surprise you.

2/7

Atlas Moth

Found in India and Southeast Asia, the Atlas Moth is one of the biggest moths in the world. Its wings can spread up to 30 cm wide, and the patterns on them look like snake heads– a clever way to scare off predators. Even though it’s so large, the adult Atlas Moth doesn’t eat at all. It lives only for a few days, just long enough to mate and lay eggs.

3/7

Titan Beetle

The Titan Beetle lives in the rainforests of South America and is known as one of the longest beetles ever found. Its body can grow over 16 cm long. Even though it doesn’t fly very often, it has strong wings and can take off if it needs to. What really stands out are its powerful jaws– they’re so strong, they can even break through wood.

4/7

Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing

This giant butterfly is found only in Papua New Guinea. It’s the biggest butterfly species in the world, especially the females– their wings can spread up to 30 cm wide. Sadly, because of habitat loss and illegal collecting, this butterfly is now endangered. It’s protected by law, and efforts are being made to help it survive.

5/7

Mydas Fly

The Mydas Fly is one of the biggest flies, growing up to 6 cm long. It’s found in different parts of the Americas and is known for looking like a wasp. This look helps protect it from predators. Even though it may seem scary because of its size and appearance, it’s completely harmless to humans.

6/7

Goliath Beetle

The Goliath Beetle lives in tropical areas of Africa and is one of the heaviest insects ever found– especially when it’s still a larva. As adults, they can fly and are easy to spot because of their bold, patterned shells. They may not be the longest insects, but their strong bodies and ability to fly make them true insect giants.

7/7

White Witch Moth

The White Witch Moth lives in Central and South America and has one of the longest wingspans among moths, sometimes almost 30 cm wide. These moths are active at night and hard to spot. Their plain-colored wings help them blend in perfectly with the forest around them.
