Unusual driving laws of the United States

Driving laws are really important- - there’s no doubt about that. They help keep everyone safe and make sure we get where we’re going without problems. But sometimes, don’t you think some laws feel a little too strict or confusing? While most of us know the basic rules- - like stopping at red lights and not speeding- - California has a few strange driving laws that might surprise you. Some are for safety, but others just make you wonder, “Why is that even a rule?” Let’s take a look at five surprising driving laws in California you probably didn’t know about!

2/6

No bathrobes behind the wheel

In California, it's illegal for women to drive while wearing a bathrobe. Though it’s an old law and rarely followed, it’s still technically on the books. The law most probably goes back to a time when it was significant to encourage people to dress appropriately when leaving home.

3/6

Dunkin’ donuts parking rule

In South Berwick, Maine, it is illegal to park within 25 feet of Dunkin’ Donuts. The town uses the coffee shop as a reference point for parking distances. While it seems oddly specific, it was most probably created to keep the area around Dunkin’ clear for traffic flow, particularly in busy areas.

4/6

The gorilla law

There is a myth that it’s illegal to drive with a gorilla in your car in Massachusetts. Well, lucky for those who want to drive with one, it is not true! The actual law is that animals must be safely secured when transported, but there's no specific ban on gorillas. The confusion comes from a law about transporting animals, which requires cages or proper documentation to keep them secure and prevent accidents.

5/6

Don’t leave your car door open

In Oregon, leaving your car door open for too long can result in a fine and is illegal. Doesn't matter if you’re loading groceries or getting out, it is significant to be fast-- this law’s created to keep traffic flowing smoothly and avoid accidents.

6/6

Keep your car trash-free

In Hilton Head, South Carolina, it’s illegal to keep trash in your car. The law's main goal is to maintaining and preserving the breathtaking beauty of the area, especially since Hilton Head is a popular tourist destination with lots of outdoor activities and nature.
