Meet the 5 most common insects that might be hiding in your home

Whether you live in a high-rise apartment in a busy city like Mumbai or a house in a quiet Tier-2 town, insects are a normal part of home life. It’s not always about how clean your home is– even the cleanest places can attract insects, especially when the weather changes, there is moisture, or small cracks around walls and windows.

Different seasons bring different insects indoors, from the wet monsoon to the hot summer. Some bugs are harmless or even helpful, while others should be kept out. Knowing which insects are which will help you handle them calmly and easily.

Here are five of the most common insects found in Indian homes and the reasons they appear.

2/6

Ants

Ants usually show up after rain or during very hot weather. While we often think they come for crumbs or sweets, changes in temperature or humidity are usually the real reason. Most ants aren’t harmful, but some, like carpenter ants, can damage wood.

3/6

Centipedes

Centipedes usually stay out of sight and prefer damp, quiet places like under sinks or in basement corners. While they can look scary, they actually help by eating other pests like cockroaches. If you see them often, it might mean you have other insects in the house.

4/6

Wasps and Bees

Sometimes, bees and wasps build nests in vents, attics, or wall gaps where they’re hard to spot until they get active. If you hear a lot of buzzing in one spot, there may be a nest nearby. While bees are important pollinators and usually not aggressive, having them close to your home can be dangerous, especially for those with allergies.

5/6

Cockroaches

Cockroaches thrive in humid, dark places in the home– especially near kitchens, drains, and garbage bins. The German cockroach is the most common indoor type and multiplies quickly. Besides contaminating food, cockroaches can trigger asthma and carry harmful bacteria.

6/6

Spiders

Spiders usually stay hidden in corners, behind furniture, or near windows. They don’t look for contact with people and rarely bite. In fact, they help by eating other insects like flies, mosquitoes, and moths. Unless their webs become widespread, they aren’t usually a problem.
