‘Varanasi’ cast: SS Rajamouli likely to replace Rajat Kapoor in Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, Prithiviraj Sukumaran starrer - Report

SS Rajamouli is working on his next mega directorial venture, ‘Varanasi’ starring Tollywood superstar Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithiviraj Sukumaran. The movie is currently in the production phase and the latest reports suggest that the ace filmmaker is likely to be making a change in the cast.

Considering a chage in the cast

As per a report by Deccan Chronicle, the ‘Baabubali’ director is considering replacing actor Rajat Kapoor who was earlier signed to play Mahesh Babu’s father in the film. It is imperative to add that no official announcement regarding the decision has been made. However, it is suggested that the decision is being discussed seriously behind the scenes.


It is reported that Rajat Kapoor was initially chosen purely for his acting skills. The actor is known for his strong performances in Hindi films like ‘Mithya’, ‘Mixed Doubles’, and ‘Siddharth’. However, creative differences may have surfaced during discussions about the character. It is said that the director and actor were not fully aligned when it came to shaping the role in a very specific manner.



The ‘RRR’ director seems to have felt the collaboration might not deliver the exact impact he was aiming for. Rather than stretching the process, he is reportedly considering a replacement. The source also mentioned that the director has taken a brief break from the shoot while reassessing the casting.

Interestingly, senior actor Prakash Raj is said to be a strong contender for the role. He has previously played Mahesh Babu’s father in ‘Dookudu’.

Mahesh Babu is likely to be seen as an adventurer, with his character to be inspired by Lord Ram. His character is named Rudhra. Global star Priyanka Chopra plays the female lead as Mandakini and Prithiviraj Sukumaran will be seen as the main antagonist as Kumbha.
